Nyman's Diamond

Pascagoula won the Class 5A state championship Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. Ole Miss signee Chase Nyman led the way.

The 6-foot, 180-pound middle infielder, who played second base during much of the season and in the three-game state title series against Hernando, had an amazing run. He was 9-for-12 with a home run, two triples, two doubles and four singles, along with 18 total bases.

In the title game Tuesday night, a 9-6 win for his team, Nyman was 3-for-3 with the home run, a two-run blast in the fifth inning.

"I was chomping at the bit to play," Nyman said of the Panthers' opportunity to win a first state title for PHS since 1996. "We grew up thinking about this, and we finally got there. My first at-bat was a ball off the wall. From there, my confidence went through the roof. You really couldn't get any (pitch) past me. I really don't know how I did it, but I was just locked in."

Locked in indeed, as was his team. The Tigers won game one 4-3, but the Panthers claimed game two 13-3.

An honor graduate, Nyman and his classmates went through commencement ceremonies last Friday night.

"We had to go back (from Jackson) between Thursday's and Saturday's game to graduate," he said. "I plan to come up to Ole Miss June 25 to start some classes. And I'm going to come up there and start working out, get on a program, and start getting ready."

Nyman will likely be drafted, and there is speculation he could go somewhere from the 6th round to the 12th round.

"I think I'm going to come to school," he said, sounding confidently.

Nyman batted .430 this season with five home runs, six triples, and 12 doubles. He had 22 stolen bases to lead the team in that department.

Nyman is a Dandy Dozen selection by the Clarion-Ledger, a Perfect Game Top 100, and an UnderArmour All-American.

"It feels great," he said of the state title. "We planned on it the whole season, but it hasn't really hit me yet. I guess I'm shocked that we won it. We've talked about it. It's fun because you grow up with guys and your senior year you win it. That's a pretty good deal."
