This Week In Baseball

Baseball made another clean sweep of a weekend series, this time against Lipscomb. That's an impressive four for four so far.

Obviously things get tougher this weekend. Southeastern Conference play begins for Ole Miss at Arkansas. The Rebels and the Razorbacks have historically played much later in the SEC season, like late April or even May.

The weather in the Ozarks this time of year could be a major factor, although there are several days remaining to see how that plays out.

But first things first as Ole Miss heads to Monroe, La., for a two-game set Tuesday and Wednesday against the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe. ULM is 8-7 after losing two games to Northwestern State at home over the weekend.

Ole Miss will start right-handed sophomore Josh Laxer Tuesday night and freshman righty Brady Bramlett Wednesday night.

This Ole Miss team continues to find ways to win. One thing they need is for sophomore right-hander Chris Ellis to get completely healed, as well as sophomore right-hander Hawtin Buchanan and freshman RHP Jacob Waguespack.

Ellis will travel to Monroe and Fayetteville, while the other two will not as they heal up – Buchanan from some inflammation and Waguespack from some arm soreness.

John Gatlin, as reported last week, will have foot surgery for a broken bone Wednesday, thus ending his season officially. After that has some time to heal, he will have shoulder surgery from the injury he suffered right before the season began. Gatlin, one of the team's captains along with junior righty Bobby Wahl, will return for another senior season in 2014.

Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco became the alltime winningest coach in Ole Miss baseball history with Saturday's victory. Jake Gibbs had 485 wins in 19 seasons as head coach. Bianco, in his 13th season, now has 487 after Sunday's win.
