Looking to Impress

Sardis, Miss., running back Justin Conner, a 2016 prospect, didn't receive an offer from Ole Miss at its elite camp earlier this month.

Even so, the 5-foot-9 1/2, 182-pound Conner is expecting one soon.

Conner, of North Panola High School, already holds an offer from Mississippi State. The Bulldogs join Memphis as the schools Conner said he's currently hearing from the most.

But Ole Miss is right there, too.

"They said I did pretty well," at elite camp, Conner said. "They haven't offered me yet, but I've been talking to (Ole Miss running backs) Coach (Derrick) Nix. I think Ole Miss is close to offering me, but I haven't heard nothing yet.

"Coach Nix said I did very well at camp. They're going to watch me all through the season."

Conner has a strong relationship with Nix, who is entering his sixth season at Ole Miss and second under head coach Hugh Freeze. Nix led a unit that finished fifth in the Southeastern Conference last season with 173.8 rushing yards per game.

"We're very close," Conner said. "I talk to him on the phone several times. We talk about me being down at Ole Miss and them offering me."

Conner admitted this summer is important for him.

Along with a camp stop at Ole Miss, he has visited Alabama, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. At elite camp June 8, Conner recorded a 4.39 40-yard dash and 4.08 short shuttle. He participated in the Rebels' 7-on-7 tournament a day later, as well.

"It's very important for me to get recognized and show my abilities to the coaches that I can play on the D-I level," he said.

Conner has plenty of time to sort out his recruitment. For now, his focus is on the upcoming season at North Panola and continuing to work on his still-developing talents.

"I'm elusive," he said. "I've got good speed and very good hands. I catch the ball real good."
