Nine-Inning Gem

Christian Trent has pitched in front of some big Ole Miss home crowds this season. But he knew Grove Bowl Saturday would be the biggest yet. And it was.

The junior left-hander, who transferred from Delgado Junior College in New Orleans, said he was pumped. And it showed in Ole Miss' 6-0 win over Auburn.

"Not nerves but more like excited," he said as the large crowd moved to Swayze Field from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. "Being out in front and seeing fans go nuts like that. The crowds have been good but obviously not like this."

Trent, now 4-0, said he got better as the game went on. Some of that was due to the Rebel offense scoring runs and the Rebel defense playing well behind him with only one error after five miscues in Friday's 8-5 win over the Tigers.

"I really felt like early I was struggling a little bit," Trent said. "I felt like I locked in around the third or the fourth as the game kept rolling. I think it was my best outing and with the run support, I felt we had momentum. I felt it was one of my best starts for sure."

He threw 113 pitches in the game.

"I'm used to throwing around 90 pitches a game," he said. "I was well over that, but I felt good going into the later innings."

The complete game means Ole Miss has a lot of arms left for game three. The Rebels only used three pitchers – Chris Ellis, Aaron Greenwood, and Josh Laxer – Friday night.

"It's good to keep the bullpen from doing anything so you can use them for later games," Trent said.

The Rebels, 24-8 overall and 6-5 in Southeastern Conference play, have claimed this series with two wins. Auburn is 19-13 and 5-6.

Ole Miss also had a non-conference win earlier in the week against Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-1. Trent said the comeback from four straight losses last week began before that.

"Honestly it started in practice on Tuesday," he said. "We played well Wednesday. We've got these two wins (against Auburn) now, and we obviolusly want to get this third win."

Game three is Saturday night at 6:30.
