Coach's View: Cameron Ordway

Giles County (TN) Coach Walt Smith believes Rebel commitment CB Cameron Ordway has "all of his football ahead of him," despite a productive high school career.

Pulaski, Tenn., has had a major impact on the Ole Miss football program in the past three years.

Rebel Quarterback Bo Wallace, the all-time Ole Miss leader in total offense, is from Pulaski and Giles County HS.

Another Giles County product, Cornerback Cameron Ordway, is heading to Oxford and hopefully he will help the winning tradition that Wallace helped establish continue.

Giles County Coach Walt Smith believes Ordway has that type of collegiate potential.

"Athletically, Cameron has the it factor," said Smith. "He holds the school record for career interceptions with 15 and last year, playing both ways for us, he scored 10 TDs from the wide receiver spot on receptions or jet sweeps.

"He had nine of those picks as a junior when we went to AAAA State Championship game. This year, nobody would throw at him, but he still got three interceptions."

Smith talked about length, speed and ball skills as Ordway's strengths.

"He's in the 4.4s in the 40, so the speed is there," noted Smith. "He's got long arms and legs and can motor, but what I like are his ball skills. When the ball is in the air, he thinks it's his. He attacks the football. His ball skills are exceptional.

"In my opinion, Cameron has the speed and length to play with anyone."

Ordway, who has been named to the East-West Tennessee All-Star Game, has a couple of issues to clear up, according to Smith.

"Cameron has some academic work to do, but he projects to be a qualifier if he will take care of his business," Smith closed. "Also, he really needs to put on some weight and get stronger for the rigors of the SEC.

"He only weighs about 170 pounds and he really needs to get to 180-185, I believe, to get on the field on that level, but as I said, the speed and length are there. It's just a matter of time before his body fills out and he makes a contribution to the team."

Giles County HS has been good to Ole Miss via one Bo Wallace. Hopefully, the trend will continue with Cameron Ordway.
