Recruiting Competition: Shawn committed to Pittsburgh and basically shut down his recruitment despite some feelers by some other schools, but there was always something gnawing at him – the Panthers wanted him as a defensive end and he wanted to play middle linebacker. Late in the recruiting process, Ole Miss ran across big Shawn, scouted him and offered him an opportunity to play middle linebacker. Although he was reluctant to go against his word to Pitt, it was the different type of offer from the Rebels that flipped him. He signed with Ole Miss on faith because he has never been to campus. Rare, but it happens. Duke, Illinois and Mississippi State were also schools who showed interest and offered him a scholarship.
Rebel DC Dave Wommack: "Two years ago, Mike Marry, our big middle linebacker, graduated. Then this year, D.T. Shackelford, another MLB with girth, graduated and we had a need for a bigger middle linebacker on our roster to hold up in the trenches against some of the power teams we play in the SEC. We feel that Shawn could be able to help us in that capacity pretty quickly. He’s a big kid who is physical and moves well. We are excited to have him.”
Curtis: “Even though I never went to Ole Miss during the recruiting process, I met coaches who came to my school and I was impressed. I am a faith-based person and they have a faith-based environment. They also offered me what nobody else was offering – a chance to play middle linebacker, which is the position I like the most. I like to be in the middle of the action and Ole Miss has a need for a bigger MLB.”
Scouting Report: Obviously, Shawn’s size is his main attribute. He’s big, strong and very physical. Movement was the question mark on him, but if you watch some of his high school film, he covers a lot of ground quickly for a big man. He’s also a leader and a high character young man.
Coach Hugh Freeze Quote: “I love the character of this young man and his family. He was brought up the right way, he has a very good work ethic and I think he fits into what we want here in young men. On the football side, we needed a bigger Mike LB and he certainly fits that bill. Shawn is almost 250 pounds and he’s an easy 6-3, maybe a bit taller. We think he can be a force inside in our defense. He’s active and instinctive and we like the way he plays the game of football.”
