Recruiting Competition: Ross is an Honor Roll student who was an early commitment to Rice and then got more interested in Stanford, Texas Tech, SMU and Mississippi State. He was intrigued by the academic excellence of Stanford, but his test scores were not high enough. After visiting Ole Miss, and learning of its School of Business, Ross paid more attention to the Rebels. After his official visit to Ole Miss, he was all in.
Donelly: "Ole Miss is known for its top business program in the nation, and I want to major in business. And on top of that, playing in the SEC on the best scoring defense in the nation is something any defensive player aspires to do. I love the coaches and the way they do things. They are straight up with you. They stuck with me all the way. I loved the coaching staff. Amazing guys. I love the feeling of the town; it’s so oriented around football. It’s such a great atmosphere. And on the official, I just fell in love. They were saying that in the SEC, they rotate their d-linemen. They need d-linemen. With Robert possibly leaving next year, they’re in need of d-linemen. I don’t know how it’s going to work out, I’ve just got to go out there and work and prove myself. I’m definitely going to try and get a little bit quicker, get a little bit faster and get a little bit stronger. This is a great transition from high school to college.”
Scouting Report: Rebel Defensive Coordinator Dave Wommack likes explosive players. Donelly has that attribute. He needs to mature physically some to withstand the rigors of the SEC, but he has the frame to build on and the feet to be a competent DT in the SEC with some added strength and bulk. He also plays with a bit of a mean streak and has a quick first step off the ball.
Coach Hugh Freeze Quote: “You can never get too many defensive linemen or defensive tackles. We think Ross fits what we are looking for. He’s got good feet and explosion. His first step is impressive and he has a knack for finding the ball in the fray. I think Ross could be one of the sleepers of this class. He’s bright, athletic and driven. He likes to compete and he does all the little things, on and off the field, the right way. He’s disciplined in the classroom and on the football field.”
