Freeze Frames

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze met the media for his weekly press conference on Monday. Full transcript inside.

Opening Statement...
"I'm proud of our team's response last week - the staff and the kids. Everyone that's in this building I thought had really good focus, and we had good practices. It's always great when the scoreboard validates your efforts. That's not always the case in life or in football, but this time it validated our efforts and performance. The goal and the challenge is to carry that over to this week, to carry the positive things that we do really well and continue to build upon them and correct the negatives. There were a lot of positives; congratulations to Trae Elston and Marquis Haynes for their individual awards, very deserving. A lot of great efforts, I thought it was our most complete defensive performance of the year. Offensively we were balanced. We had too many penalties and didn't take care of the football which has to improve particularly going on the road against a very hungry Auburn team. This will be our ninth straight game; that presents its own challenges with just trying to manage, in my mind, what is best on how to adequately prepare our team, having played that many games in a row. We'll sit down and formulate the final plan this afternoon. I've got a lot of thoughts, but remain physical because I think our team responded to that last week. This Auburn is a scary team. Coach Malzahn does a phenomenal job with a great staff. His kids are right there at the edge and are really close to having the success that they desire. They have playmakers, and their quarterback is playing really well right now. It will be a great challenge. Again, on the road we have not been ourselves, so that's another challenge that we're anticipating answering and hopefully playing our best road game of the year."

On playing on the road, and how they can improve their play...
"We're thinking about all that, and I'm probably not going to talk a lot about that, even if I knew exactly the day of the week. We were good our first road game. Our energy was good. And I don't know if it is so much being on the road or the fact that we lost some confidence, particularly on defense. Maybe it had something to do with the loss of some kids and not performing well early on in some of these road games. And we didn't handle, offensively, the gaps very well in one of those. We'll address all of those things. I think we have regained some confidence on the defensive side, and we'll make some changes on how we operate offensively. I think it has been the missing confidence more than anything, and hopefully we've regained some of that."

On the improved tackling Saturday night...
"Again, in coaching, you make bad calls, good calls, poor judgements, or you don't plan. You think you're doing the right thing all the time, but you know in your heart you do that. But, with injuries that we have occurred and knowing we were playing 10 straight games, we backed off on some of the physical aspects of practice. Tackling has been cut back a decent amount. Last week, we made a decision on that. We still need to focus on that because we still missed I think 11 tackles. Some of it had to do with them. They had some good players. But our fundamentals were a lot better. We were on our feet with our heads up. We were much better. Hopefully it was because we put an emphasis on it. Not just putting an emphasis on tackling, but on playing passionately and flying to the football and running pursuit drills every day. We ran to the football like we were known to do."

On how the read option opened up the running game...
"It helps. Again, those are not called things. Those are post-snap reads that we have. It does. It is an extra gap that they have to defend, and that helps on the tailback runs as well.

On whether it was Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen having a bad day or the defense that shut him down...
"If you watch the tape closely, there were two opportunities for them to have explosive plays that they didn't make. And I thought the rest of the time we were in a good position. There were a lot of times where I didn't think there were any options to throw the football. I don't think we are going to have to worry about false sense of being over confident. I want us to be confident. I want us to feel good about who we are. I think we play better when we feel that way. Is it false hope? I don't know. But I want us to feel confident. I'll take it. I'd rather that than the other side."

On the difference that Laremy made in the game...
"Laremy is arguably the best tackle in America. If you play defenses like you play the other night, it is important to have him. I think that allowing people to move them into their normal positions gets them to a more confident level as well. Playing right tackle is different than playing left tackle. Fahn (Cooper) played his best game too. He really played well. I don't know if that is confidence from having Laremy back and moving back to right for the majority of the game, but he played very well, as did Aaron Morris and Javon Patterson. They all did some really good things. It is nice to have him back."

On the play of the defensive backs, and what they did to correct some of the issues form last week...
"We basically ran four things instead of 14. We made sure our kids were going to play hard and be in the right spot. Sometimes it just clicks in the game plan. There will be a point in time where C.J. Hampton and the Moore twins, Tony Bridges, and Red (Zedrick Woods) are out there. Red played very well. He's been real unsure of himself and all of a sudden, the other night, he is very confident. Cam (Ordway) was in great position for two fade balls. Hopefully, it just kind of clicks. Again, with one game, it is hard to tell. We picked up the tempo of practice and went good on both Tuesday and Wednesday, which we haven't been doing. Which one of those things was that worked I'm not sure, but we are going to try them out again.

On Laquon Treadwell's feelings towards the Auburn game...
"I'm not sure. I haven't really talked to him about it specifically. I think he has had enough games under his belt now where I don't know if that would really matter to him. I haven't spoken to him about that."

On the status of Tony Connor and Robert Nkemdiche...
"Tony is going to try to run today. I have no idea how that will go. Robert is still going through the concussion protocol. He didn't have to start it back over, which is a good thing. He needs to be symptom free. I haven't heard today if he is ready to go or not. Hopefully things go well with Tony, but I don't know. He's been in the pool running, but we'll see how he does on grass. The only one that may be limited from the game is Woody (Woodrow Hamilton). He will be limited in practice this week. Christian Morris with the neck and spinal contusion, that return is unknown right now.

On playing against Austin Goldson...
"We're playing Auburn. We aren't playing a certain individual. We'll attack the offense and defense how we see fit. When you get into coaching, most of us are for the kids. If he is happy with his move, we are happy for him. We aren't going to lock into one individual."

On Justin Bell's performance...
"He did okay. Snaps were pretty good. That was his first game, and as a coach, you get a little uptight about that. He graded out good with effort. He did a couple of things we would like to see him do differently, but that is going to happen when you get into a new spot. I thought he played solid."

On Akeem Judd and if playing time is determined by feel...
"We play them all. That would be our preference. This is the first game where we were able to get off the field on third down. We didn't really go tempo, and we had 93 plays. When you run 93 plays and you're getting more opportunities, you're going to get more carries and more guys (on the field). That's who we hope to be. You have to get off the field on defense and convert some too, offensively. We got to 93 plays and didn't do too well offensively on third down. I was really proud of Akeem's effort. The others did too. Jaylen (Walton) and Jordan (Wilkins) did well also. Jordan is fighting for extra yards, and you hate to see him turn the ball over in the red zone. That was a really good defensive play. But I thought they all ran the ball effectively."

On how running press coverage benefits the secondary...
"We mix it up between press, off, and bail. Tony (Conner) is probably more comfortable doing that. They had so much talent, which if they were able to run quick screens and take advantage of our off coverage, it can become a 40-yard play in a heartbeat. So that's what I thought we had to do against this team. I thought our guys did well with it."

On the school removing the state flag from campus...
"Again, I've said publically my stance is that it is the right thing for the University, and hopefully our state will follow suit. I think it represents our core values of who we want to be. This state is so hospitable and, while it means a lot of positive things for a lot of people, it brings up some hurt feelings for others as well. I think it is time we all move forward together, and I think that is how we should go about it. I talked to (Interim Chancellor) Morris Stocks this morning, and hearing how the process went, I think it was very positive how the University handled it."

On balls being batted down by the defensive line...
"I think that is part of the territory from a good defensive line. I am more concerned about forcing it downfield with six minutes left, and you've got a back that will run for 40 if you throw it to him. Chad (Kelly) and I have a relationship that is in a good spot. We can be very honest with each other. If you watch the first quarter and a half, that is as good as I have seen. He understands exactly what we are trying to do. And somewhere in there, we had a few things go bad. We had a touchdown get called back, and the very next play a turnover. We started pressing a little. He needs to handle that a little better, stay within the system and move the ball. What I like about him is he will be the first to tell you exactly what he should have done differently. It isn't a mystery. Now, it is just us moving him to getting that done on the field."

On the finish at Talladega yesterday...
"I TiVo'd the race and watched it late last night. I talked to Ricky (Stenhouse Jr.) last night. Love his helmet. I loved that Stenhouse finished in the top 10. I wasn't crazy about the finish at all. I want to see them line it up and do it again. Of course, I was pulling for (Dale Earnhardt) Junior to win, but those are the rules that they play by. That is not my position to say, but as a fan, I wish we could have seen them run a little longer."

On controlling their own destiny, and how that factors into the team's confidence...
"I don't know because I haven't talked to them about that either. There are a lot of teams that control their own destiny, I guess. I know LSU still controls theirs. All of that is great, but let's just win one at a time. I know that is in the back our kids' minds. Hope is a great thing in life. You have to maintain that hope, whether you are going to end up on top or in the middle. I like to take it one week at a time. We got our team ready to play very well at times, and sometimes we haven't. The challenge that I always look at is how do I get them ready to play at Auburn on Saturday to give us the best chance to win."

On the kicking game...
"It didn't get talked about much in the media after the game, but I thought one of the keys was how well our special teams played. If you follow their games, they (Texas A&M) really hurt some people in the return game. It was really a non-factor in our game, and I thought it had to do with our plan and our execution by the kids. With Nathan Noble, we have moved some of our kickoffs around, which was effective for us. We used two different punters depending on what hash or side of the field we were on. That proved to be very effective. I think we pinned them down inside the 10 twice and once more inside the 20. We converted on our field goal attempts, except after the first drive. That was a good kick. It was a foot wide-right, which happens. Then Collins Moore has brought some stability for us because he is a great team leader and young man, and I'm happy he is bringing us some stability for us on the punt return team."

On what he expects from Auburn...
"Knowing Gus (Malzahn) like I know him, he is going to have his kids ready to play. They'll have a great plan and be hungry for success at home. There's nothing like returning at home in front of your people to help you get that boost of energy that you need. I expect we'll see the best Auburn team of the entire year."

\"We're playing Auburn. We aren't playing a certain individual. We'll attack the offense and defense how we see fit. When you get into coaching, most of us are for the kids. If he is happy with his move, we are happy for him. We aren't going to lock into one individual.\"

On Justin Bell's performance...
\"He did okay. Snaps were pretty good. That was his first game, and as a coach, you get a little uptight about that. He graded out good with effort. He did a couple of things we would like to see him do differently, but that is going to happen when you get into a new spot. I thought he played solid.\"

On Akeem Judd and if playing time is determined by feel...
\"We play them all. But I thought they all ran the ball effectively.\"

On how running press coverage benefits the secondary...
\"We mix it up between press, off, and bail. Tony (Conner) is probably more comfortable doing that. They had so much talent, which if they were able to run quick screens and take advantage of our off coverage, it can become a 40-yard play in a heartbeat. So that's what I thought we had to do against this team. I thought our guys did well with it.\"

On the school removing the state flag from campus...
\"Again, I've said publically my stance is that it is the right thing for the University, and hopefully our state will follow suit. I think it represents our core values of who we want to be. This state is so hospitable and, while it means a lot of positive things for a lot of people, it brings up some hurt feelings for others as well. I think it is time we all move forward together, and I think that is how we should go about it. I talked to (Interim Chancellor) Morris Stocks this morning, and hearing how the process went, I think it was very positive how the University handled it.\"

On balls being batted down by the defensive line...
\"I think that is part of the territory from a good defensive line. Now, it is just us moving him to getting that done on the field.\"

On the finish at Talladega yesterday...
\"I TiVo'd the race and watched it late last night. That is not my position to say, but as a fan, I wish we could have seen them run a little longer.\"

On controlling their own destiny, and how that factors into the team's confidence...
\"I don't know because I haven't talked to them about that either. The challenge that I always look at is how do I get them ready to play at Auburn on Saturday to give us the best chance to win.\"

On the kicking game...
\"It didn't get talked about much in the media after the game, but I thought one of the keys was how well our special teams played. Then Collins Moore has brought some stability for us because he is a great team leader and young man, and I'm happy he is bringing us some stability for us on the punt return team.\"

On what he expects from Auburn...
\"Knowing Gus (Malzahn) like I know him, he is going to have his kids ready to play. They'll have a great plan and be hungry for success at home. There's nothing like returning at home in front of your people to help you get that boost of energy that you need. I expect we'll see the best Auburn team of the entire year.\"
