Highlights from OM commit Donta Evans

It's no secret that Ole Miss has not been able to hit on their needs at the linebacker position during the Freeze era. The Rebels look to be rectifying that problem with the '16 class. The headliner at middle linebacker comes from Archer high standout Donta Evans. Inside we go over his film and break down his game.

Scout.com Ranking: No. 41 MLB

Scout.com evaluation: What people don't understand in coach Wommack's defensive scheme is the MLB is the quarterback for the defense. It's the most complicated position to play in Ole Miss' 4-2-5 scheme. It's comparable to a left tackle or a quarterback on the other side of the ball. Donta is exactly what they are looking for because he's extremely bright on and off of the field while providing the toughness to play inside the box in the SEC wars on any given Saturday. Some in camp compare him to Mike Marry with more speed. Evans was clocked at 4.77 at the most recent Nike Combine which is by far the fastest out of any of the middle linebackers Ole Miss has brought in during the Freeze era. To give you an example Mike Marry, D.T., and C.J. Johnson never broke a 5.0 forty while playing middle linebacker.

But it takes more than speed to succeed at the middle spot in Wommack's defense. It also takes one that understands the game and knows how to take the correct angles and keep your eyes in the right spot. Donta does all of these things very well, while again, bringing a "dog" attitude inside the trenches. The Rebels believe they have found exactly what they are looking for in a middle linebacker with Mr. Evans.
