Hattiesburg High tailback racking up offers

Fabian Franklin helped Hattiesburg to only it's second winning season since 2008 this past fall. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound tailback had over 1,200 yards of offense and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore. Colleges have taken notice.

The Hattiesburg high running back coach, Rashad Gandy, discusses the skill set that his star sophomore running back brings to the table.

"He brings a great skill to the table," Gandy said about Fabian Franklin. "He can run the ball. He can catch the ball. I think he averaged almost 13 yards a catch this season for us. Overall he's just a great football player and even a better person."

Franklin is not one to try and run around you; he wants to run over you.

"I have to describe him as a hard runner and hard to tackle. He's real good between the tackles and can take it all the way. He's a real good cutter but loves to run through you. Fabian doesn't do a lot of juking and jiving; he just goes right through you. He looks for contact when he's running. He's a very physical back. Fabian has already picked up some early offers from schools like Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Mississippi State. I think he's catching a lot of people's eyes right now."

Fabian added this about his game.

"You have to bring energy and have enthusiasm and play hard," Franklin said. "You have to run the ball with courage and know what you are doing. Mostly getting past the line and trying to break tackles and getting to the open field so I can get it to the house. That's what I'm trying to do every time I touch the ball. It's mainly just running off tackles."

Franklin acknowledged the four early SEC offers.

"Tennessee, Alabama, MSU and Ole Miss," Fabian said. "They all offered me. It really lets me know I'm doing something right on the field. I'm just going to keep working really hard day by day and get ready to have an even better year next year."

The All-State performer got a chance to watch Team Mississippi practice for the MS/AL All-Star game. The practices were held at Hattiesburg High's football stadium. Fabian watched the Tuesday practice to see what all he needs to work on.

"In two more years I should be out there playing with those guys. I just need to keep working in the weight room and getting stronger and faster."

Ole Miss was the first school to offer and they hold the early lead. He speaks about all of the schools that have offered him so far.

"The Ole Miss Rebels are a really good football team. I like how they didn't just give up after catching a bad break against Arkansas. I got to see them play in the Sugar Bowl. They are trying to win championships. I like Ole Miss out of all of them right now. Alabama, I like their running back, Derrick Henry. I like how he plays and runs the ball. I like their second stringer too. Mississippi State, I like Dak Prescott the quarterback. I like how they play him and what they are doing on the field. And Tennessee, I just haven't gotten to watch them a whole lot, but I'm going to watch them some more this fall."

Mississippi State has had some contact with the Hattiesburg running back coach as well.

"They just like Fabian as an overall player. They like what he brings to the table and his work ethic and what all they have seen on the film so far. They constantly call and check up on him."
