Devin Rockette's dream has always been to play for the Ole Miss Rebels. Today that goal was realized.
"I text coach (Jason) Jones this morning and told him I was ready to commit," Rockette said. "He told me to give him a call. I called him back and he told me to call coach (Hugh) Freeze. Coach Freeze asked about how my national track meet was going. We talked about that for a little while and he asked if I had some news for him. I told him that I was ready to commit. Coach Freeze said that was what he had been waiting on. He told me that I came out there and competed (at the OM camp) and earned it. Coach Freeze just said congrats and welcomed me to the family."
The Oxford Charger attended the Ole Miss Elite camp last week and earned a scholarship.
"I went up against the best receivers at the camp and had a good day. They liked my coverage skills and speed. I ran a 4.39 on two separate runs and broad jumped over 10-feet. They were impressed with my 4.1 short shuttle. They like me speed and the way I break on balls. It was a dream come true for me to get an offer from Ole Miss. It didn't take me long to decide that is where I wanted to go when I got that offer."
Mississippi State had him at their camp on Tuesday.
"I ran a 4.4 and had a 39.4" vertical. Coach Mo (Maurice Linguist) asked me if Ole Miss had offered, and I told them they did. He told me to give them a call Friday. They had some good news for me."
The door looks to be shut on Ole Miss' competition.
"I grew up in Oxford. Since I was a little kid I've dreamed of playing for the Red and Blue one day. That's always been my dream. They are competing for championships at Ole Miss now. Why would I want to go anywhere else? This is home."
Rockette helped Oxford to its third straight state championship game last season. He led the secondary with 53 tackles and 20 pass breakups. Devin also qualified for the national high school championship. He runs the 100, 200, 4 by 100 and 4 by 200.
