Four-star LB chose the Rebels over Mississippi State and South Carolina

Four-star linebacker Willie Gay is an Ole Miss Rebel. The Starkville, Miss., product chose Ole Miss over South Carolina and Mississippi State Friday afternoon.

For the second recruiting season in a row, Ole Miss landed a highly-rated commitment out of its in-state rival’s back yard.

Starkville, Miss., LB Willie Gay committed to the Rebels over Mississippi State and South Carolina Friday afternoon. The 6-foot-1 1/2, 215-pound Gay follows the lead of his Starkville High School teammate, four-star wide receiver A.J. Brown, who signed with Ole Miss over the hometown Bulldogs on National Signing Day in February.

Gay is rated the No. 93 overall prospect in the country by Scout.com and the No. 5 outside linebacker. He’s the second linebacker addition in the last week for head coach Hugh Freeze and staff, joining three-star Louisiana linebacker Josh Clarke.

Gay held additional offers from, among others, Florida, Michigan, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Alabama and Tennessee. He’s the No. 8 commitment for the recruiting class of 2017.

“It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but after a lot of praying and thinking about this, I have finally made my mind up and this is the place where I can make an early impact and be the greatest to ever come through at the LB position,” Gay said.
