Jaylon Reed checked in at the Ole Miss camp at 6-foot-1, 170-pounds and ran a 4.52 forty by laser. The next thing he knew his first SEC offer was extended.
"They loved my size, length and ability to cover," Reed said. "They put me up against their top receivers there all day. I just did my best. I hadn't even had any contact with them at all before the camp. I wasn't expecting an offer or anything like that. It just happened."
The Ole Miss defensive back coach, Jason Jones, gave him a few pointers during the camp.
"He told me to just be comfortable and play in my comfort zone. Just go out there and compete and be a competitor."
The Ole Miss head boss, Hugh Freeze, told Reed that he has a spot on the team after the camp was over.
"He watched me doing some drill work. Coach Freeze came up to me and said he liked what he saw. He asked me about my school and coaches and followed me over to the 1-on-1 drills. He watched me for about about an hour. Coach Freeze said I'm a competitor, and I'm a ball player. After the camp was over he and coach (Maurice) Harris took me and my Uncle into their office. That's when they told me I had an offer."
The news was surprising and exciting all rolled up into one.
"I was kind of speechless. It took me by surprised. I literally cried because I was so happy. The first thing I did was call my mom. She started screaming. She's really proud of me. That made me feel so good. It's always been a dream of mine to play in the SEC and to get that chance at a school I grew up watching makes it that much better."
Jaylon also attended an Ole Miss three day camp his freshman season. The relationships have carried over.
"Their coaching staff treats me like family. They are real humble good christian people. That's what I like about Ole Miss so much."
The next camp on the docket was to Alabama in July.
"They have been recruiting me really hard after Ole Miss offered me. They wanted to get me over there to come work out in front of them. They want to get me back up there again soon. I went to LSU's camp as well. They have been recruiting me really hard lately too."
