"Zi" could provide the Rebels with immediate help at linebacker

LB Zikerrion Baker out of Minden, La., could very well be called upon to help fill a void at one of Ole Miss' vacant linebacker spots in his debut season. What are the Rebels getting?

Zikerrion Baker
Minden, La.
6-foot-2, 215
Signed with Ole Miss over USM and ULL
Scout.com Ranking: No. 76 overall MLB

Scout.com evaluation: Baker was named the Times Picayune 4A Defensive Player of the Year, as well as Shreveport All-Area Defensive Player of the Year, after collecting 103 tackles and five sacks as a senior.

When you watch his film, three things pop up. First, he has speed (ran a 4.6 40-yard dash at the Nike Regional) and is a true sideline-to-sideline player. Second, when he arrives to the ball carrier, he's in a bad mood. Lastly, he has a great "get-off" when lined up at defensive end. "Zi," as he is called by family and friends, lined up both outside and inside this season. Ole Miss is going to be multiple on defense, though the Rebels will use a 4-3 as their base package. He'll probably play MLB in base but can slide over to outside when they go 3-4. He has the frame to continue to grow and put on some added pounds.

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze believes Baker is a guy who will come in with a chip on his shoulder because he didn't receive the attention that most guys do with his skills. Baker also recently qualified, so grades should not be a problem.
