Former Starkville DL now at East Miss CC

Lorenzo Dantzler out of Starkville, Miss., played at Southern Mississippi as a freshman. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound defensive end enrolled at East Mississippi CC this spring with hopes of finding a new home next December. His first recruiting stop was to Ole Miss.

Lorenzo Dantzler helped Starkville to the 2015 6A State Championship. Along the way he collected 19 tackles for a loss and 13 sacks. The All-State selection signed with Southern Mississippi and took a redshirt his freshman season. This past January he decided to transfer to East Mississippi CC.

"It was just something I needed to do," Dantzler said. "It was nothing against USM. I enjoyed my time there. They got a new staff in there after I signed. I just wanted to start over. I decided East Mississippi CC was the best spot for me. It's just down the road from where I live, and they have a great football program."

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze started following Lorenzo shortly after he transferred to East Mississippi CC.

"He started following me in early February. As soon as it happened I called A.J. Brown. We have always been really close. A.J. always tell me how much he loves it up there. He wants me to come be his teammate again. I just told him how excited I was. I didn't text coach Freeze. I wanted to see what happened next. (East Mississippi head coach) (Buddy) Stephens got in touch with me shortly after that. He told me that Ole Miss was really interested in me."

The week before the visit to Oxford the Ole Miss head coach made contact.

"I talked to coach Freeze about a week before my trip. He wanted me to get up there for their Junior Day. He was excited to see me."

What did he learn about Ole Miss on the trip?

"I just wanted to see what type of defense they were running. I wanted to see how I would fit into their scheme and just meet all of their coaches. I got to sit down with coaches Freeze, (Wesley) McGriff, and their new defensive line coach Freddie Roach. They are going to run a 4-2-5 defense. They want me playing defensive end. That's all I cared about.

The trip to Oxford went better than expected.

"Everybody knew my name. It felt like home when I was on my visit. I feel like if I go to Ole Miss it will be because they need me and not want me. I'm staying in communication with them a lot now. They are coming to watch me practice this spring."

What stood out the most about the visit?

"I just liked talking to their coaches. Coach Roach coached at East Miss CC. He knows everybody over there. Coach Freeze told me that I was raised right and I've gotten bigger. I really like coach Freeze and all their coaches. They are all down to earth."
