Nathan Pickering had a dominate sophomore season. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive lineman collected 72 tackles, 21 sacks, 26 tackles for a loss, 3 caused fumbles, and batted down four balls.
Colleges took notice.
"I have offers from Ole Miss, MSU, USM and Alcorn," Pickering said. "Ole Miss was the first school to offer me earlier this year. MSU and Alcorn offered me right after that, and then USM offered me a week or so back."
He took in a recent trip to the Ole Miss junior day to check out the Rebels.
"It was great. I loved everything about it up there. They treated me like family. The coaches, players, campus, just everything. I like the way it looks. It's a beautiful campus and comforting feeling. I went up there once before to see the Egg Bowl, but that was the first time I really got to look at everything. I wanted to really look at their education programs because that's all I've ever been taught since I was raised. I like the academic setups they have up there. They have a nice program."
Things began to heat up with the Rebels last spring.
"They came by the school, and I kind of felt like they really liked me. I started talking to their coaches and just started building a relationship with those guys."
What is Pickering looking for in a school while he is taking his visits?
"First, like I said earlier, I'm really focusing on their academics. Football is only a shelf of one's life, but football wise, I'm looking for a team that I can get exposure and get better as a player."
Growing up in Mississippi many take one side of the other, Ole Miss or MSU, but that's not the case with Nathan.
"I didn't grow up rooting for either school. I'm just a fan of football. The only difference is that I have a cousin who goes to State, but I really got a good vibe up there at Ole Miss as well."
The All-State selection also took in a trip to Starkville recently.
"I went up there the weekend before I tripped at Ole Miss. It went good. They treated me like family. I liked the way they communicated with me. They showed me around and treated me like family."
Pickering showcased his talents at the Nike Regional in New Orleans and made quite an impression. Scout had the following to say about the 2019 prospect
"The 2019 prospect did not have much notoriety coming into the event, but he played well up front inside and outside en route to being named a "Final Five" D-lineman by the camp staff. We liked Pickering's work, too, especially with his consistency off of the football and motor at a head-turning 6-foot-5, 270 pounds. Pickering has picked up early offers from Ole Miss and Mississippi State." said John Garcia
