Defensive tackle out of Alabama has better than expected trip to Oxford

Gavin Lewis out of Madison, Ala., arrived at the Ole Miss spring game not knowing what to really expect. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive lineman left with a good taste in his mouth.

"The place is amazing," Lewis said. "I had a lot of fun. I really did. I enjoyed the atmosphere and their style of play. My family and I had an awesome time over there. I can't wait to get back."

Gavin wanted to see what the Ole Miss defensive line is all about. He got that question answered.

"Physical is the first word that comes to mind. I wanted to see what technique they played. Do they play the three of four and how do they come off of the ball? They fly around. I loved the atmosphere. It answered a lot of my questions. I just needed to know if I would fit in. I definitely say yes to all of those questions. I just like how they come off of the ball. They play the three technique which is what I was hoping. They don't give them too much to worry about. I talked to coach (Freddie) Roach after the game, and he said they are keeping it real simple. They have one job and that is to get past the line."

Several things stood out about the trip.

"I just love the atmosphere at Ole Miss. They are one big family. They have a lot of energy in their program. They are all in it together. I think the NCAA (investigation) has really united their team. They are all in it together, good or bad."

His family felt the same way.

"My mother loved it. She loved their coaches, and the core values they have in place for their program. She loved the town and campus too. Mom feels like I would be in great hands if I were to go there."

The Rebels were one of his first offers. A few have offered since.

"Colorado offered me a couple weeks back. Mississippi State also offered me. Purdue too. I've been hearing from Georgia a lot. I'm suppose to go over there soon. I'm going back to Auburn too. I'll probably be heading up to Tennessee soon too. It's getting pretty busy. A lot of new schools have been contacting me recently."

Ole Miss signed his teammate, A.J. Harris, last season. Could they be in line to add another player off of Bob Jones' team?

"They are way up there. There's not a thing I don't like about Ole Miss right now."
