Star Defensive Lineman Camps At Ole Miss
What is your current height, weight, and forty time? "I am 6' 6", 255, and I run a legit 4.8. (should be noted that Andrew's best 40 time at the Ole Miss camp was a 4.73 and his worst 40 time was a 4.95.) I I have run below and above that (4.8), but that is my consistent time."
Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "Mostly defensive end."
Where else? "Tight end."
Which position do you prefer to play? "Most definitely defensive end."
What do you consider to be your strengths on the field? "Goodness, for me, a lot happens before the game ever starts. I study a lot of film. On the field, in high school, you can get away with being more athletic than the people you are going up against. But your techniques makes you a consistent player. I guess I would say my techniques and good footwork are my biggest on the field strengths."
What are you trying to work on to take your game to the next level? "For me, I am just trying to get bigger, faster, and stronger. I know you probably get that answer a lot, but I am trying to to work on adding some more muscle weight, and keeping my speed at the same time, if not get faster."
Tell us about your junior campaign? "Team wise, we won the 5A championship. It was quite a year."
What were your personal stats for the season? "Everybody has asked me this, and I do not know them off of the top of my head. I think I had around 70 tackles, but I am not sure about that. I think I had 10 to 12 sacks and somewhere around 23 or 24 pressures."
Which awards did you garner for your play? "Gosh, I really have no idea. The way the papers do it around here, it is so helter skelter. I am sure I made some Region and State teams, but I try to not keep up with them."
Which schools have you camped at this summer? "I have been to Ole Miss, Auburn, and North Carolina. I am going to take a break. I might go to Florida in July, and take a couple of other one day camps, but that is about it. I really do not even know if I will do that."
Did you get a chance to take any spring visits? "I went to Ole Miss' spring game, and I went to Auburn's and Alabama's Junior Days."
Did you grow up a fan of any one school? "Actually, I grew up an Auburn fan. I had heard it from before, but you lose that title as a fan when you are being recruited. I feel like it is dangerous to take that into consideration when trying to find the right school. But, I did grow up an Auburn fan, and my girlfriend is a big Ole Miss fan, so she is always throwing that in there to me."
Which schools are at the top of your list? "I guess I would say Ole Miss, Auburn, and Duke. But, I am not trying to let anyone get ahead of the list until I take a good look at everybody. I can not say anything negative about any of the schools that I have visited. The main thing is looking at the coaches, players, and campuses. I like Ole Miss and Auburn a lot, but I have not spent enough time to see who is out in front."
Tell us what stands out about Ole Miss. "I like the fact they want me to play defensive end. I am comfortable there. I like Coach Hobby's style. The facilities are great, and they will get even better when their new indoor facility opens. I also like their head coach a lot. A lot of the coaches are too uptight, but Coach Cutcliffe is laid back, but at the same time business like. And their campus, I do not know if you have ever been there or not, but it just blows you away. It is so pretty and homely feeling. I also like the fact that their school is not too big. It is just big enough, but not so big where you do not know everybody."
What attracts you to Auburn? "I like their facilities as well. They are not quite as nice or new as Ole Miss', but they are nicer than most of the schools I have been to. And their stadium is huge. It rocks during the games. It gets really loud in there. Although I do not like playing tight end, I like their tight end's coach, Coach Ensminger. I also like their FCA director, Chet Williams. I heard the guy at Ole Miss runs a great FCA chapter too, but I have not had a chance to meet him. Overall though, Auburn is a great school."
And Duke? "I mean, the campus at Duke is unbelievable. It reminded me a lot of Notre Dame's (campus). I forgot, I went to their spring game too, so you might want to put that in your notes. I think Coach Roof can turn that thing around. He just has to get the talent in there. But, just getting a degree from Duke means a lot. That is something you have to really look at."
Have you received any early scholarship offers? "Yes sir, so far, Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Duke, Arkansas, Clemson, and Louisville. I think that is it. I do not want to leave anyone off, but that is all that I can think of off of the top of my head."
During the May evaluation period, which coaches contacted you by phone? "All of the ones who offered. I talked to Alabama too. Lets see, North Carolina. I talked to Memphis also."
Which coaches stood out during your conversations? "I really like Coach Hobby at Ole Miss. He is their DE coach. He is awesome to be around, on and off the field. I liked Coach Cutcliffe too. I think we have some good things going on. The next week I went to Auburn's camp, and I got a chance to talk to Coach Ensminger, their tight ends coach. I also got a chance to talk with Coach Tuberville. We kind of talked about the life of a student athlete at Auburn. I was impressed with what he had to say. This past week, I spoke with Coach Roof (Duke), and he was great. If anyone can turn that program around, it is Coach Roof. Those coaches are really the only ones I have talked to in person. I liked Coach Cut and Hobby a lot, and Coaches Roof and Tubberville too."
When it comes decision time, what will be the factors? "For me, I will have to find a place where I can win ball games and be a part of their success. And the degree, it has to mean something. I also want to be involved with a great FCA (Fellowship for Christian Athletes) program. A nice campus will be important too, as I do not want to attend a school that stuck in a big city."
Andrew carries a 3.8 GPA and a 31 on his ACT test.
