The following information was revealed during interview with Mr. Williams:
What is your current height, weight, and forty time? "I am 6' 3", 290,
and the last time I ran the forty, I ran a 5.1."
Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "I think
right now, it is for offensive guard and defensive tackle. They asked me which
one I wanted to play, and I told them defense, but I think they mainly like me
for offensive guard."
What are your strengths on the field? "My speed for a big guy is pretty good.
They say I have good feet. I understand the game and I react quick. I can just
read the plays before they ever develop. I just think I have good instincts."
What do you need to work on for the next level? "I need to get my bench (320)
and squat (350) up. Especially my lower body, I need to work on that. I need to
get a little slimmer, although in college they say you need to be in the 320 -
330 range, but that needs to be good weight."
What was East's record last season? "We went 7 - 4."
Which positions did you play? "Offensive guard and defensive tackle."
How long have you been starting for East? "Well, in 9th grade, I started
like 3 games at defensive tackle. I got a lot of playing time in the other games.
In 10th grade, I started at both defensive tackle and center. And last year, it
was (offensive) guard and (defensive) tackle."
What were your stats from the 2003 campaign? "I led our team in tackles.
I probably had around 80 - 90 tackles and like 5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and
3 recovered fumbles. That is about all I can remember. I can not tell you how
many tackles were for losses because coach does not keep up with them."
Did you garner any awards? "Yes sir, I made All-Metro and the Shelby County
Which schools are currently writing you? "I have gotten mail from Tennessee,
Michigan, Illinois, Ole Miss, Memphis, Vandy, Kentucky, Arkansas, Notre Dame,
Any early offers? "No sir,. not that I know of."
Which school is showing you the most interest? "Probably Ole Miss and Tennessee."
Have any colleges caught your eye yet? "Right now, I really like Tennessee
and Ole Miss. Really, I like all of the SEC schools. I like Mississippi State
a lot and Memphis too, but mainly the SEC schools. They would probably be the
Have you had a chance to visit any of the schools you are interested in? "Yes
sir, I took an unofficial to Ole Miss."
When? "The day they played LSU."
Anymore? "Well, I went to a Memphis game, when they played Tennessee Tech.
They did not sponsor my visit or anything, but I went to the game."
How did your trip to Ole Miss go? "It was great. They showed us their weight
room. Their coaches went over what we need to do to qualify. They showed us their
stadium, and we got to meet their whole staff. I talked with my position coach
for a while, and then Coach Cutcliffe talked about how he ran his program. That
was about it."
Do you plan to take any future visits to the schools you are interested in? "Well,
actually, I went back to Ole Miss for an unofficial visit (Junior Day) yesterday."
What all did you do during your trip? "This time, Coach Cut talked about
how they are getting in a new indoor facility. He said it was going to open next
year, when we would be getting there. We met again with our position coach, and
we watched some film. I also spoke to their team's tutor, and he told us all about
their tutoring programs. They showed us their weight room again, but this time,
we got to see their lifting techniques. They also told us the criteria each player
had to meet. Coach Mendoza told us what we need to be eating and not eating. He
said that conditioning is one of the more important, if not the most important,
factor to being successful on the college level."
Did any of your family attend Ole Miss' Junior Day with you? "Yes sir, my
father went with me."
Did anyone accompany you to the Ole Miss/LSU game? "Yes sir, my father and
Malcom Rawls, a teammate of mine. Oh yea, Malcom's mother came down too."
What did your father think of Ole Miss? "I think my father enjoyed it. He
liked the atmosphere and how the fans were into the game. He also likes their
coaches and just the atmosphere around there. Yea, he enjoyed himself. He said
it was a close ride from Memphis. Yea, my father likes Ole Miss a lot."
Will you attend anymore Junior Days this Spring? "Right now, I just do not
When you are trying to find the right school for you, what will you be looking
for? "Number one, will I get a chance to play? And how soon will I get to
play? I know I have to do my part, but I will look at the players on their team
and see what years they are. I will also see if they offer my major, how close
it is from home, and just how the campus is."
Who does East open their season up with next year? "MUS."
Have you set any personal goals for your senior year? "I just want to be
a better player than I was last year and help my team get to the championship
game. That is basically it."
Dan carries a 2.8 GPA and a 17 on his ACT test.
