Football news and notes.
So here we go:
We hear that South Panola wide receiver prospect, Travis Sanford (WR/6' 4", 195), is now on track to qualify. This is huge news for the Rebel's program, as we believe Ole Miss has the inside track for The Insiders' #2 ranked prospect out of Mississippi.
Sanford currently has 7 touchdowns on the young season, which is tied for 1st in Class 5A.
The two positions that need immediate help for next year's club are wide receiver and linebacker. With Travis being a work horse and a game breaker, look for Sanford's name to pop up even more prominently in the near future.
Sanford's academic progress has propelled him into a "must have" for Ole Miss' program.
While we are talking about the South Panola prospects, we hear that John Jerry (DT/6' 6", 300) has looked so good at DT this year, the Rebels have moved John to their defensive line board.
John's big brother, Peria Jerry (DT/6' 2"/282), is expected to complete his needed classwork at Hargrave by May. Peria will resign with Ole Miss in February and is expected to enroll in summer school.
Another South Panola prospect who the Rebs are eying is none other than multitalented, Derek Pegues (DB/5' 11", 208). Despite reports of Pegues cooling off on Ole Miss, we continue to hear good things with Derek's and Ole Miss' relationship.
Another wide receiver who could give the Rebs an immediate boost next year is Coahoma CC product, Julius McClellan (WR/6' 4", 215). We hear that Ole Miss signee and current teammate of Julius', Corey Kizer (WR/6' 2", 190), is doing a great job of selling the University of Mississippi to McCllelan. Julius is expected to attend the Ole Miss/Tennessee game in a couple of weeks.
For those that are not familiar with Julius, he is a 6' 4", 215 pound wide receiver prospect who had 48 catches for 1,297 yards and 14 touchdowns. Julius still has a chance to graduate in December.
Speaking of linebackers, we hear that the Rebels are feverishsly searching for a juco linebacker to come in and provide some immediate help for next year's club.
In fact, we hear that a coach or two is going to fly straight from the Wyoming game, to the juco ranks in Kansas and California, as the evaluation period for the junior college prospects start on Monday. We will keep you posted on the juco player(s) that are spotted.
Rumors of Berkner High's (TX) star defensive tackle, Trey Bryant (6' 2", 305), visiting Ole Miss in October are false. Sometimes Mississippi gets confused with Mississippi State and vise versa, as this looks to be the case. Trey is actually being recruited by MSU, not the U of M.
Word has it that Ole Miss signee, Lance Lee (OT/6' 6", 292), is very close on the ACT test. The Ole Miss camp feels good about the chances of Lance achieving his needed score by December. If Lee does complete his requirements by December, he will start practice in the Spring and will have 5 1/2 years to play 4.
Finally, we hear that this could be Coach Cutcliffe's biggest class yet. We look for Ole Miss to sign as many as 29 players, which includes a few "sign and place" prospects.
