Defensive gem commits to Rebels

Evan Button (SS, St. Louis, MO) - Coach McDonnell, Ole Miss' ace recruiter, will comb all parts of the country to find an impact player. While scouting one of the premier AAU programs in the country, Mid West Prospects, he came away impressed with the league's Outstanding Defensive Player, Evan Button.

An offer was made, and now the rest is history, as Button committed to the Rebels last night.

The following information was revealed during our interview with Evan Button:

What is your current height, weight, and what do you run the 60 yard dash in? "I am 6' 0", 180, and my best 60 time is a 6.78."

Which position do you currently play? "Short stop."

Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "SS, infield."

Which side do you throw and bat from? "I throw from the right and bat from the left."

What are your defensive and offensive strengths? "In the field, I have good range and get to the ball well. At the plate, I hit for power and average."

What are you trying to improve on for the next level? "My speed, and I would say my arm strength and quickness."

How long have you been starting for Desmet (5A)? "I was going to start my freshman year, but I broke my arm when I was in hockey season. I started my sophomore and junior years, and I will start this year."

What were your stats as a junior? "I batted .350 and had 2 HR's. I am not sure about my stolen bases, but it was probably around 15."

Your defensive stats? "I do not know my fielding percentage. They did not tell us that, but I think I had 6 errors for the season."

What was your team's record last year? "I think our record was 19 - 6. We made it to the sectionals but lost in the 14th inning."

You play for the Mid West Prospect club during the summers? "Yes sir."

Tell us a little about this AAU program. "Well, this was my second year to play with them. Last year, we had one 1st rounder, one 2nd rounder, one 17th rounder, and one 28th rounder to go in the draft. We have a pretty good team.(laugh). Oh yea, we won the SSSA World Series in Nashville, Tenn. We went 8-0."

I hear you were the Tournament's Outstanding Defensive Player; is this true? "Yes sir, I made All-Tournament too."

Rumor has it that you committed to Ole Miss; is this true? "Yes sir, I did."

Which colleges were recruiting you the hardest? "S' West Missouri State, LSU, Clemson, MTSU, Baylor, Missouri, and of course Ole Miss. Those were pretty much my final schools."

Why did you choose Ole Miss? "The (official) visit pretty much sold it. This past year, I did a lot of research and came away very impressed with Ole Miss' program. They were calling a lot, and gave me a great offer. When I went on my official visit, it was just awesome. I knew I could not see myself playing for anyone else, so I decided to go ahead and commit."

Will you take anymore official visits? "No sir, I have canceled them."

Which coach for Ole Miss recruited you? "Coach McDonnell. He was the one who called the most. Coach Lake called some too."

Are you friends with another prospect from St. Louis named Scott Vanslyke (son of former major leaguer, Andy Vanslyke)? "Yes sir. We talk and keep up with each other. I actually came in contact with him this summer when we played for the Area Code team in California. We talked in-between and went on our official visit together to Ole Miss."

Will you sign in the early signing period? "Yes sir."

What is your academic status? "I have a 2.8 GPA and a 19 on the ACT."
