Bobby Clark talks about his commitment to UM
We spoke to Bobby and his father today to confirm the commitment that was made to Ole Miss.
The following information was revealed during our interview with Bobby's father, Robert Clark:
What is your full name and what is your son's full name? "My name is Robert Earl Clark (Sr) and my son's name is Robert Earl Clark (Jr) but we just call him "Bobby". It makes it less confusing."
Did you play basketball growing up? "No sir, I did not play basketball. I played football."
Tell us about Bobby, the person? "Well, he is a real good young man, as far as academics and community wise. He loves to help the kids out in our neighborhood, that is what people from the outside do not know about him. He is just a very intelligent young man who cares about people and loves the game of basketball."
Where is Bobby currently enrolled? "He is at Central Park Christian in Birmingham. It is a prep school with a strong Christian environment."
What is Bobby's current size? "He is about 205, and he is around 6' 5 1/2"."
Which position is Bobby going to play at Central Park? "He will be playing the 3, but when he gets to Ole Miss, he will be playing the 2."
Are you saying that Bobby is going to resign with Ole Miss? "Oh yes. Bobby is going to Ole Miss."
When will Bobby resign with Ole Miss? "It will probably be in November."
Why did he choose Ole Miss? "It is really about going somewhere and playing and playing his right position. Ole Miss does not really have a true 2 guard. And plus, we feel he can excel academically in their environment."
Who recruited Bobby for Ole Miss? "Wayne Brent did. He started to recruit him when he was like in junior high (laugh). Then when he left Ole Miss, Coach Barnes took it over."
Talk a little about Coach Barnes and what role he played in Bobby's decision? "We met him personally, my wife and I , last summer. We felt like he was a good Christian man, and we knew after meeting him, that is where we wanted our son to be. As far as a coach, we saw what he did when had talent. He took them to the Sweet 16, so we knew he could coach. When we saw the people they were bringing in this year, we knew they were going to be a really good team for the 3 to 4 years. And really, he just tells me the truth. That went a long way with me and my son and my wife. Not once, has he ever said something and not done it. He has always done everything he said he was going to do. We knew we had someone to build that bond. All colleges are the same with just different landscapes. Coaches are what separates them. You have to put your trust in these people because they are going to be an important role model for their development, both on and off the court. They are pretty much a father figure for these boys, and we wanted Coach Barnes to be that man."
Have you informed the other schools that your son is going to resign with Ole Miss? "Yes sir. This fall, when we committed to Ole Miss, and word got out that we were not going to change our minds, they all pretty much quit calling."
Who was calling Bobby this summer before he committed to Ole Miss? "Penn State was recruiting him real hard. Coach Stansbury (MSU) really recruited Bobby hard. Western Kentucky, Tennessee, and Connecticut called a bunch too. But we pretty much knew what was in store for Bobby because Ole Miss had stuck with him for a long time, and we were not going to back out just because he had to go back to school."
What is Bobby going to bring to the table for Ole Miss? "Most of all, he can play good defense. He can shoot the 3 and handle the ball well. The only thing he needs to do is keep getting stronger and keep getting in better condition. He will do that at Ole Miss. I have no worries about that. He can really handle the ball well for someone his size. He ran the PG at the AAU Nationals the whole summer and did really well. That is the thing, he can handle the ball so well."
When will Bobby complete his needed academic requirements? "He graduates on May 8th (2005)."
The following information was revealed during our interview with Bobby Clark:
Are you set to resign with Ole Miss? "Yes sir, I am."
Why did you choose Ole Miss? "Because Ole Miss is really a good school. Plus, Coach Barnes and I have a really good connection. We look out for each other. I also have a good chance to start, and I am looking to come in and play."
Will you take anymore official visits? "I am going to Ole Miss but that is pretty much it."
When? "I am not sure yet, me and Coach Barnes are working that out right now."
What are you going to bring to the table for Ole Miss? "I can bring scoring, defense, and rebounding, especially rebounding."
