Calvin talks about his Ole Miss trip
The following information was revealed during our interview with Calvin Wilson:
What is Hattiesburg's current record? "We are 7 - 3. It is going real good right now. I expected for it to go even better, but right now, we are starting to catch our stride."
What most have you improved on this fall? "I think my drive blocking and my pass blocking. I feel I am coming around pretty good. This is my first year to play offensive line the whole time. It has really made a difference."
You never played OL for a whole year? "I was really more of a defensive lineman before this year."
You still get some snaps on defense? "A few, on certain situations."
Which game has been your best so far? "My best game was against Oak Grove. I graded out at 96%, and I had 20 knockdowns."
Have you been to any college games recently? "Yea, I went to Ole Miss this past weekend."
How did it go? "Man, it went good. I really enjoyed myself."
Did anyone accompany you? "My mother and cousin went with me."
How did they like it? "They liked it a lot. They really liked their new indoor facility."
What new did you learn about Ole Miss while you were on your trip? "Their game atmosphere is really exciting. Their fans get everyone pumped up. They have a good fan base down there. I can see why their players play so hard."
What most did you like about Ole Miss during your trip? "The Grove. It was exciting. A lot of people were there, and a lot of people recognized who I was. That was cool."
Which coaches did you speak to while you were at Ole Miss? "I talked to Coaches Luke (OL/TE), Latina (OC), and Cutcliffe (Head Coach)."
What was their message to you? "They were just saying how happy they were to see me there. They told me how important it would be fore me to take an official visit with them, because how bad they want me to play for them."
Are you going to take an official visit with Ole Miss? "Yes sir. I will set the date after I work out a few things."
What does your current official visit schedule look like? "I go to Auburn this weekend (11/12), Tennessee on January 7th, MSU on January 21st, and Florida on January 21st."
Who else are you considering? "I am still looking at USM, West Virginia, and LSU."
Do you have a leader? "No, not at all. They are all pretty much the same."
Which school(s) are recruiting you the hardest? "I would say MSU, Ole Miss, and Auburn. They are all recruiting me pretty hard. And LSU too."
Reports have come out that you are following the recruitment of Josh McNeil pretty hard; will his decision influence yours? "I am going to do it on my own. If I end up playing with Chris, that would be great, but I am going to go where I feel the most comfortable at."
Are you talking to anymore players inside the state of Mississippi right now? "I talk to Archie (Sims) a couple of times."
Calvin Wilson carries a 2.8 GPA and an 18 on the ACT.
The following information was revealed during our interview with Mildred Maddox, Calvin's mother:
How did your visit to Ole Miss go? "We really enjoyed it. Oxford is a beautiful community that really supports their school."
Was this your first trip to Oxford? "We went to Jr Day last spring, but this was our first Ole Miss football game to go to."
What did you learn about Ole Miss during your trip? "Basically, they have an excellent academic program. We will look at that with all of the programs. We have talked to some of the people who have finished their degrees at Ole Miss from this area and everyone has told us how much they stress academics at Ole Miss. From our research this weekend, we came away very satisfied. They have an excellent graduation percentage and the atmosphere for their football players is like a family. Coach Cutcliffe was also very impressive. He takes the time to sit down and talk and not rush things and do a whole lot of promising We really appreciated his honesty. I would feel very comfortable putting Calvin in an environment like Ole Miss'."
