Ole Miss adds third basketball signee

The Ole Miss basketball team added another name to its list of early signees Thursday, receiving a national letter of intent from Mike Smith of Jacksonville, Ark.

Continuing Ole Miss' long-standing connection with the nearby Western state, Smith will become the 15th Arkansas native to grace the Rebel roster under head coach Rod Barnes. A 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward, Smith was an All-State pick last year at Jacksonville High School, averaging 17.1 points, 10 rebounds and more than four assists in directing the Red Devils to the state championship game.

This year, Smith transferred to Laurinburg Prep (N.C.), one of the country's top basketball prep school programs and the defending national champion.

"We've been following Mike for a long time," said Barnes. "He has a tremendous upside. Mike has a great body and athleticism and can score from the perimeter. He is also familiar with a lot of our players. We are fortunate to have him."

The first three members of the Rebels' fall signing class are forwards, as Smith joins high school seniors Trey Hampton and Xavier Webb who inked with Ole Miss Wednesday.
