Michael Oher Named TN's Player of the Year
The following information was revealed during our interview with Michael Oher:
How did your season go this year? "We finished 10-3 and won State. We had a real good season. We played real good toward the end of the year, which is what you have to do to win a state championship. "
What most do you feel like you improved on this year? "I got smarter, you know. I figured out how to play football. I always had the ability, but I needed someone to teach me the game. Coach Freeze did a great job with me this year. He really taught me a lot about the game. "
Did you garner any awards this season? "I was named the overall Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee by the Knoxville News. I was named Player of the Year in the city of Memphis by the Touchdown Club. I was 1st Team All-State, really, there are just so many awards I can not think of them all. I had a great year. "
Will you play in any All-Star games? "I am playing in the Army All-American Bowl in January. "
Have you had any recent inhome visits? "Coach Orgeron came by the house last night. He is all about football. He did not talk about anything but football. No golf, fishing, just football. He is very serious about football, and you can tell that he is going to win there and win big. "
What was your overall impression of Coach Orgeron? "He told me I would have to work for everything. He makes his players work hard. That is what I wanted to hear. I do not want to go somewhere where everything is given to you. A lot of schools tell me that I will start from day one, and that really turns me off, to be honest. "
What other coaches have been by your house to see you? "Coach Saban (LSU), Fulmer and the rest of his staff (Tenn), West (Memphis), it has been kind of crazy around here for the last couple of weeks. " Who made the biggest impression? "I liked them all. " Does it drop Ole Miss down some now that they have gotten rid of their old staff? "Coach "O" had a lot of great things to say. He is focused, very focused on football. That is all he talked about. He wants to win games, and I believe he will win a lot of games. Me and Coaches Cutcliffe, Roper, and Latina were close, very close. Hopefully I can get as close with the new staff. But me and Coach Roper, we were real tight, I mean real tight. It will be hard to replace those guys. "
Which schools are still on your radar? "Tennessee, Ole Miss, Memphis, and LSU. "
Which schools have you taken an official visit with and where do you go next? "I have been to North Carolina State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. I will go to LSU (1/21)after I get back from the Army game and then I go to Memphis (1/28) last. "
How did school go during your first semester? "I did what I had to do to keep myself on track to become a qualifier. I took the ACT test and I went up on it, but I still need a few more units. I keep going up on it every time I take it, so hopefully I can make a high enough score on it the next time around. But my books, they are going great. Coach Freeze mapped out a plan for me to become a full qualifier, and I have not messed up yet. "
