Al Jones attends Ole Miss' Jr Day
The following information was revealed during our interview with Mr. Jones:
What is your current height, weight, and forty time? "I am 6' 3", 240, and I ran a 4.78 at Ole Miss' camp last summer. I ran the same thing at LSU's so I guess that is a pretty accurate time for me."
Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "Defensive end, yes sir."
What are your strengths on the field? "Really, I just give it 100% every play. I am quick off the ball. I get after the ball, just pursue well, yes sir."
What are you trying to work on for the next level? "Just my overall strength, really."
How long have you been starting for St. Augustine? "For two years."
At defensive end? "I start at defensive tackle, but I play a little defensive end."
What were your stats from your junior season? "I had 50 tackles, assists and solos, and I also had 11 sacks. I think I had a couple of recovered fumbles, but I do not remember how many."
Did you garner any awards? "Yes sir, I made All-District and All-Parish for the second year in a row. Rivals named me to their 2005 National 100 team. Oh yea, the NFL QB Club and WWL (Channel 4) named me Player of the Week last year."
Which schools are currently recruiting you the hardest? "I have three offers so far, Ole Miss, West Virginia, and Oklahoma State. UCLA has not offered me yet, but I have been getting a lot of of hand written letters from their coaches. They are going to offer me pretty soon, them and LSU."
Which schools have caught your eye? "Lets see, I would have to say UCLA, LSU, Auburn, and Ole Miss."
You mentioned earlier that you attended LSU's and Ole Miss' football camps last summer; where do you plan to camp at this summer? "I will go to the Nike camp at LSU on May 2nd. I will go back to Ole Miss in June, and I will go to Auburn's in July. I will probably go to Georgia Tech's too."
Have you had a chance to attend any Junior Days this Spring? "I went to LSU, Ole Miss, and Auburn. I think I am going to Georgia Tech's pretty soon."
What did you learn about Ole Miss at their junior day? "It is close to home for one thing. I like their defensive scheme. I can fit in pretty well with them. And I like their coaches too. I liked it up there."
Did anyone accompany you on your trip? "Yea, my coach and my teammates, Will Russ (6' 3"/OL) and Patrick Traham (6' 1"/Ath)."
What stood out the most about Ole Miss during your trip? "Their defensive schemes. I think I fit in pretty well with how they play."
Where does Ole Miss now stand with you? "They are number four on my list (1.LSU, 2.UCLA, 3.Auburn, 4.Ole Miss)."
What did you learn about LSU on your trip? "LSU is even closer to home. Their facilities are second to none. And they have an excellent weight program."
Did anyone accompany you on your trip? "Yea, Will Russ, Patrick Traham, and Gerald Jefferson (teammates). We all drove over there together."
What stood out about LSU during your trip? "Just everything they do for their athletes."
Where does LSU now stand with you? "That is hard, but I would say number one."
When you are touring the schools you are interested in; what are you looking for? "I do not want to go too far from home, but if I had to do it, I will do it. Location is a big for me. I want to stay within a five hour drive from the crib. Another big thing for me is how they play defense. Well, like the reason I like Ole Miss so much is because of their defense. Can I fit in or not? I do not want to go somewhere where their scheme does not match my strengths. I want to play in an aggressive scheme like Ole Miss'. Their weight program will be the last thing. Location, defensive schemes, and their weight program are the main things for me."
Out of the three schools you visited, which school has the most desirable location? "LSU, most definitely.
What about Ole Miss and Auburn? "Ole Miss is only a 4 1/2 drive from the crib. Auburn is not too far, but it is a pretty good drive. "
Which school has the best defensive scheme for you? "Most definitely Ole Miss. They do a lot of blitzing and stunting. They just let you go, just let you play. I like that aggressiveness they play with."
What about LSU's defense? "Almost. They play real conservative at times, but I can do pretty well there."
Who had the best weight program? "LSU does. You can just look at their players and see how much bigger they are (than the players from the other schools)."
Were you satisfied with Ole Miss' weight program? "Yes sir, they were big too."
And Auburn's? "Yes sir, it was good."
What is your current GPA and ACT score? "I have a 2.7 GPA and a 17 on my ACT."
