Derry Beckwith set to visit LSU and Ole Miss
The following information was revealed during our interview with Derry Beckwith:
What is your current height, weight, and forty time? "I am 6' 1", 225, and I ran a 4.51 at the LSU camp."
What makes you such a good linebacker? "I bring speed and a passion for the game. I am also really aggressive, and I know what the offense is going to do before they even snap the ball."
How do you read the offenses? "Just feel. Some have it and some do not. I was blessed."
What are your working on for the next level? "I need to get a whole lot smarter. Becoming a better student of the game will be vital for the college level. You have to know what is going on or you are dead meat. I need to continue to get stronger too, always."
What do you currently bench and squat? "325 (bench) and 420 (squat)."
How did your season go this year? "We made it to the 3A quarterfinals but lost."
What were your stats for the season? "I had 135 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 4 recovered fumbles."
Any awards? "I was named District MVP and Class 3A Defensive Player of the Year."
Have you lined up any official visits? "I am going to LSU on January 15th and Ole Miss on January 22nd."
Which schools have offered you? "I committed to LSU last January, so everyone pretty much stopped recruiting me. Alabama, Ole Miss, and LSU have offered me though."
What attracted you to LSU? "Just the way the program has been built up to the status of a national program. They are right at home too, just down the street from the crib."
Has Coach Saban's departure changed your commitment status? "Not really, I am still fully committed to them. Coach Saban put them on such a high pedestal. I know it can not go down. It really did not change my heart."
Has the new LSU staff recruited you as hard as the last staff? "Yes sir."
When did Ole Miss start contacting you? "They called me as soon as Coach Saban went to Miami."
What were their selling points? "Coach Orgeron said he was going to build it up like he did at Miami and USC."
Who calls for Ole Miss? "Coaches Orgeron and Camp."
What do you like about Ole Miss? "I really can not say. I have never been up there. I was not interested in them until they started calling. I will see. It would be a fresh start, them getting a new coach and all."
What will you look for when it comes decision time? "The education part of it will be real important. Will the coaches teach you both on and off the field? Does the program expect to be a national contender every year, no matter what the circumstances are?"
Derry carries a 3.0 GPA and a 17 on the ACT.
