The following information was revealed during our interview with Martez Smith:
What are your strengths at linebacker? "This will be my first year playing linebacker. I played defensive end last season. I am moving to linebacker next year. The thing that I say makes me good is I never stop going. I never give up on a play. I knew my team needed me to make the move, so that is what I am going to do."
What are you working on to take your game to the next level? "My footspeed and body strength. I am probably better suited for linebacker. I can see the whole field now."
Tell us about Velma Jackson's season last year? "We went 11-2. We lost in the 2nd round to Charleston."
What were your stats for the season? "I had 139 tackles, 39 for losses, 12 sacks, 52 solos, 13 forced fumbles, 6 fumble recoveries, 2 defensive TD's, 6 pass breakups, and 1 interception."
Did you garner any awards? "I made 1st All-State (3A), All-Metro (Clarion Ledger), and All-Division. I came in 3rd place in state (power lifting) in Class 3A."
Which schools are currently recruiting you? "LSU, Auburn, Clemson, USM, and Ole Miss."
Any offers? "No sir, not yet."
Who do you feel like is closest to offering you? "As of right now, I think by letter recognition, I say LSU, Auburn, and Ole Miss. I am going to attend the Ole Miss and MSU camps this summer."
Which schools have caught your eye? "Well, I would love to go to Texas, but I would play for LSU, Auburn, or Ole Miss. I like the way Ole Miss has set their defense up. I like their style of defense."
When did you get a chance to observe Ole Miss' new defense? "I went to one of their practices."
Have you been to anymore practices at other schools? "No sir."
What did you learn about Ole Miss during your trip? "It is very hyper at Ole Miss. Another thing, their coaching staff. I have never seen a staff run around more than the players. They love football more than their players, and I like how they have their defense set up."
What attracts you to Texas? "I love the way their defense is so aggressive, and so many linebackers have come through Texas. Derrick Johnson is my favorite linebacker. I love the way they can get to the ball and attack."
And Auburn? "They are very competitive. Auburn loves to win. They are a school that sends a lot of people to the NFL."
What are LSU's positives? "The same things as Auburn."
When it comes decision time; what will be some factors? "The depth chart will be the biggest thing. The size of the school, their stadium, how many do they graduate, and the defense they run. They will all be important."
