Nick Hetland could fill in a weekend role

Nick Hetland (RHP, Clarendon CC, TX) - Clarendon CC is one of the premier baseball programs in Texas. They have won 5 national championships and have attended more than 20 World Series.Their ace this season was Ole Miss signee, Nick Hetland. And what an ace Hetland has been for the Bulldogs. Nick has gone 17-1 over the past two seasons.

The following information was revealed during our interview with Nick Hetland:

Which position are you being recruited to play on the next level? "I am a right handed pitcher."

And you max out at? "Low to mid-90's, but I average between 86-88 MPH."

What all is in your arsenal? "I throw a fastball, curveball, slider, and a change-up."

Your best pitch? "My curveball is my go to pitch."

The pitch that needs the most working on? "My change-up. I need to hit the spots in and out. I am working on perfecting that."

What makes you such a good pitcher on the mound? "I know when I am down in the count, I have a go to pitch (curve ball) to get the strike. I also have a good mound presence. When I say that, I mean I never get down or up while I am on the mound. I try to keep an even keel. If they get a fluke bloop hit or not, I am going to have the same expression at all times."

What most are you working on? "Staying in shape. I am running and playing in a summer league to keep me in shape."

Which league do you play for? "Apple Valley Millers (located in Minnesota, which is Nick's home state, as he is from Apple Valley, MN)."

Tell us about your freshman season at Clarendon CC? "I went 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA."

How about this past season? "I had a 9-1 record. I owe a lot to my defense for them making play after play while I was out there. They truly played great defense all year behind me. I did make some pitches too, so I guess I owe it to myself in a way, but most of it goes to my defense. I had a really good year."

Your other pitching stats? "I really have no clue. I know I pitched in 80 something innings, but I do not know about my ERA, strike outs or anything like that. I mean, I just want to win games. That is the only stat I care about."

How did your team fare? "We went 33-19. We made it to the Regional and placed 5th. Last year, we placed 3rd nationally."

Did you receive any awards? "Our team really does not give out awards. I did play in the Texas/New Mexico Juco All-Star game. That is the only award I am aware of."

Which colleges offered you a scholarship? "The three schools who offered me that I narrowed it down to were Alabama, Ole Miss, and Baylor. Then I narrowed it down to Ole Miss and Alabama. And as you know, I signed with Ole Miss."

Why did you decide on Ole Miss? "Well, I went and took an official visit down there. It is definitely a big step from Clarendon CC. The school is a lot bigger, population wise. The facilities are out of this world. They were by far the nicest facilities I have seen. That was a really big plus for Ole Miss. I do not know, when I went on that visit, it just felt like it was the place that I needed to be. I liked it so much, I decided to not even go on my Alabama visit, which was scheduled for the weekend after my Ole Miss visit."

Who recruited you for Ole Miss? "Coach McDonnell."

When will you arrive in Oxford? "Probably the third week of August, when we are suppose to report. Our league does not end until August 17th."

Has the Ole Miss staff talked to you about what their plans are for you? "As of talking to them on Thursday, they want me to be a weekend starter. I am very excited about all of the hard work I put in at Clarendon CC has finally paid off. I can not wait to throw that first pitch in a SEC game with all of those people in the stands. People just do not understand how baseball is in the SEC. There are stands full of people. People even line up outside the stands to see a game. It certainly was not that way in Minnesota (laugh), where I am from. It is not like that over here in Texas, not like the SEC. I am going to have a chance to be a weekend starter for one of the best programs in the SEC. To say I am anxious to get going, man, I get chill bumps just thinking about it."

Have you set any goals for your first year at Ole Miss? "I want to excel and be the best player I can possibly be. I just want to help the team out as much as I can. I want us to go undefeated in SEC play. That is a big goal of mine. I know what kind of class we have coming in. We can do it. We are going to get to the World Series before I leave. I promise you that."
