Another Malouf is on the rise

Mathew Malouf (QB, Oxford, MS) - Many Rebel fans might remember the name Malouf. Bill Malouf, Mathew's father, was a star quarterback for Ole Miss and later went on to the NFL. Now it is Bill's son, Mathew Malouf, who is dazzling the North Mississippi high school scene.

Mathew is a multidimensional signal caller, as he can hurt you with his feet as much as his arm. Malouf ran a camp best 4.52 at the Ole Miss Sr Camp last month. But make no mistake, Malouf can throw the rock with the best of them, and it is these two special traits that makes him one to watch for the 2005 campaign.

The following information was revealed during our interview with Mathew Malouf:

What are your strengths at quarterback? "I feel like I have quick feet and good vision. I do not know. I am just glad that I am mobile (laugh)."

What do you need to work on to make yourself a better QB? "I need to stay in the film room and study more defenses. And I could always get faster."

How long have you been starting for Oxford High? "I moved to Oxford last year. I started every game, but I did not get a lot of playing time until the 4th game. I played a lot from there on out."

Where did you come from? "Pillow Academy in Greenwood (MS)."

What did you do while you were at Pillow? "I played everything at Pillow. I played wide receiver, quarterback, and safety. I really did not play one position more than the other. They just put me where ever I was needed the most."

What were your stats from your junior campaign? "I had 1004 passing and 583 rushing yards. I think I had something like 13 TD's."

How did Oxford fare for the season? "We went 10-3 and lost in the 3rd round against Lafayette County, our cross-town rivals."

What type of adjustments did you have to make coming from Academy ball to 4A ball? "It is a whole lot faster than it was at Pillow, but it was not that big of a difference. I just went out there and had fun."

Who are the main schools that are interested in you? "Mainly the SEC West plus USM and Memphis."

Any phone calls? "Yes sir, USM, Memphis, and Alabama. I think that is it."

Which school is showing you the most interest? "I say Memphis because they have offered me."

Which schools are you keeping an eye on? "I do not know. I am trying to look into it a little bit, but it is too early. It is whoever wants me the most."

Where have you camped this summer? "I have been to Ole Miss, MSU, USM, Alabama, and Memphis."

What do you like about Memphis? "I like their coaches a lot. I also like the offense they run. They are doing the right things up there. I just like Memphis."

What attracts you to Southern Mississippi? "I like their coaches too. I also like how they will play anybody. They are not scared of nobody. I like that attitude."

What about Ole Miss? "Their coaches are fun to be around. From what I hear, I like how their offense is going to be run. I have grown up an Ole Miss fan, so I like them a lot."

Do you feel any added pressure being the son of Bill Malouf? "Not really. I just want to go with whoever wants me the most and where I can win. Just because my dad played for Ole Miss does not mean I have to. My father has always told me he was going to support me no matter where I went. I mean, do not get me wrong, he would love for me to go to Ole Miss, but if I didn't, it would not be any different."

What are MSU's positives? "State was nice (when I went to their football camp). I like how they are doing things now. They are trying to do everything right now, and I like their West Coast offense. That would be fun to play in."

What do you like about Alabama? "They are one of the top colleges in the nation. Their coaches were nice and fun to be around. Really, I like their offense a lot, a whole lot."

What will be the main factors when it comes decision time? "Just whoever wants me the most. That is the main thing. If I like it, and the coaches are fun to be around, then that is even better. I would like to stay in the South, so location is important too."

Best player you have ever faced? "Either Anthony Johnson or Eric Nicks."
