California prep star commits to Ole Miss

Michael Herrick (QB, Valencia, CA) - One of California's more prolific passers in state history has committed to the Rebels.

As a junior, Michael threw for 4,069 yards and 33 TD's on 289-for-457 passing. He threw for 292 completions as a sophomore which set the CIF (Southerns Sections) record. Michael has a career completion ratio of 63% and holds all 12 single game and career passing records for Valencia High.

Herrick was named to the California All-State Underclass Team, as well as to the All-American Underclass squad. He also made the Street & Smith's All-American Team for the '03 and '04 seasons.

Michael could become California's all-time leading passer after the 2005 season, as he only needs 2,800 yards to break the state record.

Herrick was rated as one of the Top 3 QB's at the Nike Camp (Stanford) and the Elite 11 camp that was held at the University of California.

The following information comes from our interview with Michael's father, Greg Herrick:

Where does Michael stand in the recruiting process right now? "We talked to Coach Orgeron about an hour ago. We informed him of the news. Michael committed to Ole Miss."

Why did your son choose Ole Miss? "Coach Orgeron inspires him. He likes the way Coach Orgeron handles himself. Michael is a student of the game. He followed Coach Orgeron when he was at USC. He knows that he will be surrounded by the best talent in the country. Also, the visit we took to Ole Miss two weeks ago really closed the deal. The people from the West Coast have never seen anything like Ole Miss. They have never seen facilities like Ole Miss'. The weight room, practice fields, indoor field, stadium, just the whole package. It was the most unbelievable thing we have ever seen, and we have been to a lot of places. It just blew us away. Playing in the SEC has also been a dream of Michael's for a long time. He has always wanted to compete against the best, and we feel that the SEC is the best football conference in the nation. There were just so many factors. It was not just one thing. Like the interest Ole Miss was showing in Michael. It was twice as nycg as everybody else. That really motivated us to go in this direction. We have already had a coach try and change his decision, but he is completely sold on Ole Miss."

Which coach tried to talk Michael out of his commitment? "A local coach from around here."

Michael reports a 3.67 core GPA and would like to major in Journalism or Broadcasting.
