Junior third baseman Chris Coghlan went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the Red-Blue baseball scrimmage Saturday afternoon as Coach Mike Bianco's sixth Ole Miss team went on public display for the first time since the Super Regional here against Texas. Blue beat Red 10 runs to 5.
Other offensive highlights were sophomore Zack Cozart was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Junior center fielder Alex Presley went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Junior outfielder Mark Wright went 1-for-4 but his lone hit was a two-run home run over the left center wall.
Senior first baseman C.J. Ketchum went 1-for-4 with a home run. Sophomore second baseman Justin Henry went 2-for-4 with a triple. Sophomore Jon-Jon Hancock went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
On the mound, 6-foot-4 freshman RHP Cody Satterwhite went an inning and two-thirds and looked impressive, throwing 93 to 94 mph with his fast ball. He allowed one run with no strikeouts.
RHP Lance Lynn, the 6-5 freshman, pitched well as did freshman RHP Wade Broyles.
Bianco was pleased with the Rebel offense and said the pitching should catch up as the fall goes on.
"I thought it was a good day offensively," he said. "It wasn't that I didn't think the pitchers didn't do well. But certainly it was a good day for the offense with a lot of runs scored and a lot of hard hit balls. Our defense was strong today which was good. It was a solid day for the first day (of fall intrasquad scrimmages)."
Bianco said pitchers are usually ahead of the hitters at this point.
"But today they certainly weren't," he said. "The hitters were able to handle anything they threw up there. Satterwhite looked strong out there. He threw very hard. It was good to see Lance out there. Broyles did well, and as a freshman he's done well in the bullpen which is good."
Bianco said putting the pieces of the 2006 baseball puzzle together has begun.
"We know we have talent, and when it comes to the pitchers, we have to figure out which ones are ready to throw this year and in what role. We saw some guys pitch on Monday (of this past week), we saw some today, and will see more tomorrow."
More Satterwhite: "He just looks so strong out there. He has so much confidence. Today I know he hit at least 94 on one pitch, and he was facing some good hitters."
More Lynn: "Lynn's coming along, and he's getting in better shape. He's behind some as far as conditioning and pitching shape. His velocity is not quite as strong yet."
Summing up the day: "You can't be too critical overall after the first intrasquad. There are guys that are nervous. We had a great crowd out here today. There are guys that may have played today before more people than they did in their junior college or high school games. So it was a good first intrasquad for the fall."
Other notes: Walkon pitcher Thomas Flautt pitched today. He is now on the squad after trying out this week during walkon tryouts. Junior RHP Matt Rozier has left the team. Seth Keshel will post another report from Saturday's baseball intrasquad on Sunday.
