Jerrell Powe is still firmly committed to Ole Miss

Jerrell Powe (DT, Waynesboro, MS) - Coach Orgeron made his first national recruiting impact as a head coach at Ole Miss when he received a commitment from Army All-American Jerrell Powe. Powe is currently attending classes and playing football for Hargrave Military Academy until he completes his needed classes. Jerrell plans to attend the University of Mississippi next season.

The following information was revealed during our interview with Jerrell Powe's mother:

When was the last time you spoke to your son? "I talked to him for a few minutes tonight. They can not have a personal phone so I can only talk to him a couple of times a week. But he is doing just fine though. I can really tell a difference in him already. They are doing my boy some good up there."

How has he adjusted to being away from home? "Well, it is a military school, you know. When he first came up there, he felt like he had joined the service, but he said it was growing on him. I think this is going to be a blessing in disguise for Jerrell. He needed someone to install some more discipline in his life style, and I believe they are doing a great job with Jerrell. He already seems to have matured since he left."

How is his season going? "They won this past Saturday against Army. He said it was a great experience playing against people that represent our country. He is really big into the pride thing. I think he said he had 8 tackles and 2 sacks. I know in the first game, he had 7 tackles and 3 sacks. That was the only game that I saw his stats on line. We just got our power back ( due to hurricane Katrina) the other day, so it has been hard for me to keep up with his stats. But he really is having fun with that team. I know he said he was excited about playing in Kentucky's stadium next week. They are playing Kentucky's JV team on Friday."

Has Jerrell told you what he is weighing these days? "I know when he left home, he had gotten too big. He was around 360. I think he said he has lost 15 or so pounds since the season started."

How are Jerrell's classes going? "It is going good. I got in a midterm report yesterday. He is doing really good in all of his classes but Biology. He needs to pull that one up, but he is still passing. He has been really dedicated to his school work since he signed with Ole Miss. I do not know what they told him, but it really worked. He has been making A's, B's, and just a few C's ever since (he signed)."

Do you know if Jerrell is still expecting to graduate from Hargrave by December? "I do not know for sure. According to the papers I got in yesterday, he will be there until May. But Jerrell told he that he would be leaving for Ole Miss in December. I just do not know yet. We will see."

Give us a mother's perspective on why Powe choose Ole Miss? "He is real proud about staying in the state, playing for his state, and having a chance to be closer to home. I could not be anymore prouder of my son."
