Rebels offer Cannon Smith
"They mailed it to my house today and faxed a copy to my dad's office. Coach Freeze text messaged me, and I called him to talk about it. Coach told me that they wanted to be the first ones to offer me. He told me he would love for me to come down there and be a part of their family. He really hoped I would commit. Coach Freeze did tell me that Brent Schaeffer was coming, and that I would have to wait my turn, but I appreciated his honesty. He was just being straight up with me. I was very pumped up about the news. That was my first scholarship offer. It was pretty special," added the excited Cannon Smith.
Cannon helped Christian Brothers to the State Championship game last season but has since decided to transfer to Olive Branch. Smith enrolled in January.
"I like it down here. There are a lot of great players at this school. I can not wait to play against the big boys next year. It is going to be a lot of fun."
Smith said he threw for around a 1,000 yards last season before his year was cut short due to an injury.
"I broke my hand in the second half of the season. I played around half the year. It was pretty tough having to sit out. I had to watch us get beat in the State Championship game to MUS. When we played them earlier in the year, when I was playing, we beat them on a 31 yard TD pass in the last minute. That was their only loss. It was tough not being able to help our team out when it mattered the most. I hope I can stay injury free this year."
What does Cannon do well on the field?
"I feel like I have a strong and accurate arm. When I am in there, I make good decisions. I do not throw too many interceptions. I am good at reading defenses and making quick decisions."
And what will Smith have to work on for the next level?
"I need to put on a few pounds and get a little faster. I just need to get better, all around. You can never get good enough."
Which colleges are showing Cannon the most interest right now?
"Memphis, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tulane, Oregon, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Georgia Tech. Those are the ones that send me the most mail."
Now that Ole Miss has pulled the trigger and offered the young man; does Cannon expect another offer to come soon?
"I think Tulane is going to offer me before the season starts. They have been talking pretty good lately."
Is there a pecking order for Cannon?
"Obviously Ole Miss, and I like Memphis a lot too. I like Tommy West. I think he is a great coach. I like Memphis' offense, but Ole Miss was the first to offer. Those are the two that I know the most about because I have been to their campuses so much. I guess Auburn would be another I have some interest in too."
What stands out about Ole Miss?
"Well, I love their campus and game day atmosphere. I do not know a person who does not like the Grove on game days. I am also fond of Coach Hugh Freeze. We are pretty close. They look to be a program on the rise. They had a Top 15 class last year, so you know they are getting a lot of good players. They have some very appealing aspects about them."
Cannon carries a 3.1 GPA and will take the ACT test for the first time in April.
Smith will attend the scout.com combine that is being held at Ole Miss on April 30th.
