Dexter McCluster is on track to qualify

Dexter McCluster (Ath, Largo, FL) - The Orlando Sentinal's preseason #21 overall rated prospect from the state of Florida shocked many when he decommitted from South Florida, turned down a scholarship offer from the University of Florida, and signed with the Rebels.McCluster rushed for over 2,000 yards in a very tough division and was named the Pinellas County Player of the Year for his play on the field.

Just how did this talented youngster end up at Ole Miss anyway?

"I took a visit there, and the thing I liked about it there is that it is not all about football. I got there and they had my transcript and a professor waiting on me. We went over everything and mapped out a plan for me to get qualified. I want to major in Business and they have one of the top Business programs in the country," added the very soft spoken Dexter McCluster.

There were also a couple of more factors that played into his decision.

"It was their academics. At South Florida and Florida, I needed a Foreign language and Algebra 11, but Ole Miss did not require those classes. Those classes were my weaknesses. And besides, I love their coaches and they have top notch facilities."

Good fortune has never hurt anyone, and the Rebels were certainly fortunate to land the quick and deceptively powerful runner from Largo.

What is Dexter doing in the meantime to keep himself in football shape?

"I am not running track because I am taking night classes and focusing on my academics. But Ole Miss sent me a workout schedule, so I am keeping in pretty good shape. I do 30 minutes of abs a day. The book is a 16 week plan consisting of benching, leg squats, abs, and a whole lot of cardio. You have to run six 110's in under 15 seconds, to give you an example of the cardio we do. It is just a lot of conditioning. A lot of work, but I can really tell a difference."

Ole Miss knew when they signed Dexter that he would have to really hit the books hard to qualify. So far, so good.

"Right now, I have 3 A's and a B. I need to finish one more high school class, and I will be done. I have an A and a B in my night classes right now. I am taking World History, and if I make a C or better, then I am going to qualify. I got back my ACT test last week, and I made what I was shooting for. I am retaking the SAT in April, just so I can have a back up plan if I do not get a C (or better) in World History. I do not think it is going to come down to that, but I want to make sure. I have a 720 on the SAT right now."

Now that it looks like McCluster is on track to qualify; what are some of Dexter's goals for next season?

"I just want to contribute to the team and help us get to a bowl game. I have watched a lot of games they played last year on tape the past few weeks. I have been studying everybody and seeing what I needed to do to get myself prepared. I need to keep getting stronger and learn the playbook, but I think I am going to give them some more quickness and the ability to make someone miss. I think it is going to be a great fit. I can not wait to get over there this summer and get started."
