Spring football practice report

Ole Miss is winding down practice towards Saturday's Grove Bowl game. Coach Ed Orgeron says the Rebels continue to improve.

Ole Miss Coach Ed Orgeron says his Ole Miss Rebels continue to work hard and to progress, but it hasn't been what he would call a hard and heavy spring training.

"I think it's been a rather light spring," said the second-year head coach. "It really hasn't been that tough of a spring. We've been a little low of numbers. We haven't scrimmaged all that much. We haven't tackled all that much. There's been a lot of teaching. It's been OK."

As for Monday's workout, he said the Rebels also got a lot done.

"Today we covered two minutes at the end and just kinda went over the basic things of practice," he said. "We went over the mistakes and made corrections from Saturday."

Orgeron said as this year's spring drills move toward their completion, the Rebels have gotten a lot done in a few practices.

"We've gotten most of the stuff in now," he said. "We've got a couple of other things that we have to put in, but we've got most of it in."

He said last Saturday was a good scrimmage and the tapes showed there was a war going on, with both sides of the ball showing positive signs at times.

"It was a see-saw battle," Orgeron said. "We started off hard on defense, and then the offense came back. I liked the overtime period where the guys had to compete. It was a long scrimmage. Some guys got tired, and they had to compete when they were tired, which was good."

Orgeron said Michael Hicks and Marshay Green continue to impress.

"Michael caught the ball and made some plays. He still has a ways to go but is making plays. Marshay is a good player who is quick and gives us another dimension to our football team. I really think right now that we consider him a starter and that he can play in our offense and can compete."

Orgeron called the format for Saturday's contest "our spring game format."

"We'll split the coaching staff up and let some of those guys be a head coach for a change. Maybe y'all can interview them?" he quipped.
