Kennedy inks Kenny Williams

Rebel Coach Andy Kennedy has signed his first recruit as the Ole Miss basketball mentor - 6-8 Forward Kenneth Williams from St. Petersburg Community College. Two prospects, including Cincy PG Devan Downey, will visit Ole Miss this weekend. Read about it inside.

New Rebel Basketball Coach Andy Kennedy has been beating the bushes in recruiting and his labor paid off when he recently signed Kenny Williams, a 6-8 forward from St. Petersburg Community College in St. Petersburg, FL.

Williams was a First-Team Preseason JUCO All-American who led St. Pete to a 25-7 record while averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocked shots a game.

Williams signed in the early signing period this year with Kansas State, but when there was a coaching change there, he applied for a release from his letter of intent and was granted one, opening up his recruitment.

He was a two-time All-Suncoast Conference selection at St. Petersburg and also was named First-Team JUCO All-State.

With the likely departures of Marquis Young and Mike Smith, the Rebs needed some size and Williams certainly fills that bill.

The Rebs will also have two visits this weekend from prospects. On Thursday and Friday, Rodney Jones, a 6-4, 190-pound guard from Peabody HS in Alexandria, LA, will visit.

Jones was a First-Team All-State selection and was the AAAA Player of the Year in Louisiana. He led legendary Coach Charles Smith's team to 108 wins in his three years at Peabody, including a 41-0 record his sophomore year. As a senior Jones averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Scouting reports indicate Jones can play the 1, 2 or 3 positions in college.

Also visiting this weekend will be Point Guard Devan Downey, who played for Kennedy at Cincy last year and has asked for, and received, his release from the Bearcats program. Downey will be in Oxford Friday and Saturday.
