Rebels pick up '08 football commitment

Kent Davis (RB, Tupelo, MS) - The Rebels have begun to work on their puzzle for the '08 class, as one of the top rising juniors in the state of Mississippi became Ole Miss' first '08 commitment.

"I committed to Ole Miss this morning. I spoke to Coach Freeze this morning, and I told him I was ready to get it over with. He put Coach Orgeron on the phone, and he told me how happy he was. He said by the time I get there they were going to be winning championships. He said they had a bunch of young good players, and in two years, they were going to be winning championships. He just wanted me to be a part of it."

Why would a player entering his junior year commit so early?

"I got a chance to meet all of their staff when I went over there for junior day. I had a good tour around their school. I just liked the atmosphere of the schoool, plus it is so close to home. I had always wanted to play for Ole Miss, so once I knew I would fit in, it just felt right to go ahead and commit. I have also gotten real close to Coach Freeze. Ever since I went to their junior day, we have been talking two or three times a week. I call him all of the time. We just talk about life. It is a lot more to it than football, and my mother feels real comfortable with me being watched over by Coach Freeze."

Were there anymore colleges recruiting Davis before he made his commitment?

"Yes sir, I am getting a lot of letters from LSU, Alabama, MSU, and Florida. Of course, Ole Miss writes me a lot too."

When did Ole Miss offer Kent?

"The weekend I went up there for my visit."

The 6' 2", 215 pounder got his chance to shine at running back this season as a sophomore.

"Last year I was starting at strong safety. I was not even planning on starting at running back until our back went down in the 3rd game. He tore his ACL, and now the rest is history."

What were Davis' stats for the season?

"I had 950 rushing yards and 10 TD's on 87 carries."

Davis, who's first name is Kenneth but goes by Kent, has really blossomed at the tailback position.

"We had our Spring game against Ripley, and I had 158 yards and 3 TD's on 8 rushes."

It is these type of performances that have some already labeling Kent as one of the top prospects for the '08 class.

What makes Davis so good?

"My OL does it all for me, but I make good reads, and I have good speed and power too."

What would Davis like to work on?

"I want to get my footwork a little better. I want to get faster."

How fast is Davis right now?

"I ran a 4.43 the last time I was timed this Spring."

And what about his strength numbers?

"I am benching 300 and squatting 550."
