Key signee will arrive on June 27th

Matt Smith (OF/RHP, Milan, GA) - One of Ole Miss' key pieces to their '05/06 class is set to arrive on the University of Mississippi's campus on June 27th.

The 6' 3", 200 prospect out of Dodge County helped carry his team to a 22-4 record and a "Sweet 16" appearance.

How did Matt fare at the plate this season?

"In 73 at bats, I had 38 hits (.521 batting average), 15 HR's, 10 doubles, 48 RBI's, 14 walks, 5 K's, 3 SAC's, 9 hit by pitches, and 4 stolen bases," added Matt Smith..

Did he receive any awards?

"I was named All-Middle Georgia and All-Region by the Atlanta Constitution, and I also was named the Player of the Year in Dodge County."

Last season Smith had another productive year as he had 43 hits in 82 at bats (.524 average) with 6 Hr's and 39 RBI's.

Being productive at the plate is not unusual for Matt as he has been a four year starter for Dodge County. Take a look at these stats:

In 318 at bats, Matt has 144 hits, 28 Hr's, 37 doubles, 6 triples, 125 RBI's, scored 120 runs, 11 Sac's, 35 K's, 46 walks, 16 hit by pitches, 18 stolen bases, and has only committed 6 errors in the field.

Matt set the Dodge County school records for career hits, runs scored, RBI's, doubles, Hr's, and batting average (.453).

It is no wonder why some whispers at the Ole Miss camp say he could be another Stephen Head/Brian Pettway type of player.

What kind of pitcher is Smith?

"I did not pitch a whole lot this year. I pulled a muscle in the back of my arm, so I did not even pitch until the playoffs started. I threw about 7 innings in one game and that was it."

When healthy, what can you expect out of Matt?

"I throw it in 88 - 90 (MPH range) on a good day, somewhere in there."

And which pitches are in his arsenal?

"I have a 4 seam fastball, change up, and a curveball."

Matt's out pitch?

"My curveball."

Which pitch that needs the most work on?

"My change up."

Which colleges did Matt consider before choosing Ole Miss?

"Ole Miss, Clemson, Mississippi State, and Georgia were the ones that gave me the best offers that I took into consideration."

Who came in second?

"Clemson made me a really good offer. They were my first option, but I just felt more comfortable at Ole Miss."

And why Ole Miss?

"I was playing in the Tennessee Smokie Showcase tournament last summer. The Arizona Diamondbacks invite 100 players to play in a mini-tournament. Anyway, I saw Coach McDonnell in the stands with his Ole Miss hat on. I was like, man, he was just in Florida watching me play like a week before that. And then I remembered he was in Alabama the week before that. The man just followed me everywhere. It just kind of all hit me at once that Ole Miss really wanted me. That was pretty much the clincher."

Where will Matt play next season at Ole Miss?

"They recruited me to play either LF or RF and do some pitching."
