Tyler looks to bring the big stick to Oxford

Tyler McMullen (Utility, Meridian, MS) - Arguably the top power hitter in the state of Mississippi signed with the Rebels back in November. v

The 6' 2", 200 pounder belted 14 HR's and had 48 RBI's as a junior. He was also one of the top pitchers in the Magnolia state as he carried a 8-3 record with a 1.28 ERA..

How did McMullen fare during his senior campaign?

"I hit .465 with 49 RBI's, 8 HR's, and 18 doubles," stated Tyler McMullen.

How did McMullen do on the mound?

"I went 7-3 with a 1.19 ERA. I had 123 K's and 21 walks in 64 innings."

Did he garner any awards?

"I was named MVP for S' East Lauderdale, and I also made 1st Team All-State in both polls (Clarion Ledger and 4A).

What improvements did Tyler see in his game this season?

"I felt like I improved my opposite field hitting. They knew I had a good year last season, so they started trying to jam me at the plate. I just went with the pitches and really starting going the opposite way a lot this year. My home run numbers were down, but my batting average went up. I also added some velocity to my pitches. I throw it in the low 90's pretty consistently now."

Tyler was one of the three seniors from Mississippi to be invited to the Jr Olympics this summer (side note- you had to be 17 or under when the tryouts took place, which eliminates a lot of graduating seniors ).

"It has been a great experience so far. We have only played two games so far, but it has been a lot of fun."

Another Ole Miss signee, Jordan Henry, was also selected to tryout.

"Jordan is on another team. Him and Jared Parks play for team Dixie."

This is not Tyler's first time to be selected to the Jr Olympic tryouts.

"I also went to the Jr Olympic tryouts in Joplin (MO) last summer. I played for the Dixie National Team. I played with Cullan Kight (Inf), Evan Button (SS), and Justin Reed (CF). There were some great players there, and there are a lot this year too."

In the end, why did Tyler choose Ole Miss?

"Mainly because all of my life I have been a big Ole Miss fan. I have always wanted to go there since the day I was born. When I got my opportunity, I took it. I take a lot of pride in signing with Ole Miss. If you saw my truck, you would know why (laugh)."

Where does Ole Miss plan to play McMullen next season?

"Pretty much Coach McDonnell said pitcher, corner infield (3B or 1B), or catcher. I will be competing for all of those positions. I am basically a utility player."

Due to the Jr Olympic trials going on, Tyler will not report to Oxford until August.
