Ole Miss Recruiting Tidbits

The summer is hot, and most of the Ole Miss staff is on their vacation, but there is plenty of scoop to reveal. To read about who made the Dandy Dozen team and who will most likley be Ole Miss' next commitment, read below.

***The Rebels have placed four commitments on the Clarion Ledger's Dandy Dozen Team.

They are South Panola commits LB Chris Strong and FB Jeramie Griffin, plus RB commits Johnny Brown and Robert Elliott.

All four of these player's selections come as no surprise, as they are widely considered four of the Top 10 prospects in the state of Mississippi.

The three omissions that did come as a surprise were ATH LeRoy Diggs (Ole Miss commit), LB's Stevan Ridley (LSU commit) and Johnathan Frink.

***We called all of the top prospects in Mississippi to see who made the Dandy Dozen team, and the rest of the Dandy Dozen Team includes OL Chaz Ramsey (Auburn commit), OL Derek Sherrod, DL Jazzmen Guy (MSU commit), CB Rashad Henry, RB/CB Lee Chambers (MSU commit), Ath Marcus Green, QB Drexler Johnson, and S Antwon Dixon.

Taking a close look at the Dandy Dozen team, the Rebels placed four commits, MSU two, Auburn one, and LSU one.

That leaves five members from the team that are uncommitted.

***We hear that it is a two way battle between MSU and Notre Dame for Derek Sherrod. The Rebels look to be on the outside looking in, but they are still breathing. Many insiders, including myself, have always believed that Derek was pretty much a lock for MSU, but we are hearing that Notre Dame is much more in the picture than many gave them credit.

Sherrod has stated that a decision could come as early as the end of the summer, so things could get interesting. MSU will hold their Invited Sr Football Camp next Saturday, so if a commitment is not made shortly thereafter, there could be some concerns for the Dogs. Our money is still on MSU to land Derek, as his older brother is currently on the MSU football squad.

***Rashad Henry
is an interesting prospect. He really showed out during the Championship game last December as he took the last hand-off for 70 something yards right in front of my eyes.

The kid can absolutely fly. Henry did attend the Ole Miss SR camp, but an offer was not extended, from what we have gathered. We have learned that Alabama and MSU have offered the young man and Coach Melvin Smith has been pushing for a commitment all summer.

Henry's teammate and best friend, Terry Grant, signed with Alabama. The Tide have long been considered the leader, if they decide to take Henry.

Remember, Alabama only has 14 scholarships to give this year, so they are having to be very choosy.

Right now, Ole Miss is not in heavy pursuit of Henry, but that could change, as he is still a "hot list" member.

***Marcus Green is one of the rising prospects in the state of Mississippi. He virtually came out of no where to being named on the Dandy Dozen team in all of a matter of months.

But make no bones about it, Green is a heck of an athlete and carries an SEC body.

Currently, it looks to be a three way battle between MSU, USM, and Ole Miss.

The Dogs have two inside connections with Marcus, so one would have to put MSU as the favorite. But the longer Marcus goes without committing to MSU, the better off it is for Ole Miss and USM. Our sources think the Rebs have a 50/50 chance to sign Marcus.

***Antwon Dixon has long been considered one of the Top 10 prospects in Mississippi, but there is one snag, he looks to be headed the juco route.

This has definitely slowed down the college recruiters from beating on Dixon's door, as right now he just holds offers from MSU and Ole Miss.

As we all know, Antwon's older brother, Anthony Dixon, signed with MSU last year and will be a freshman this upcoming season.

In spite of the serious inside connection MSU holds with Antwon, the Rebels are neck and neck with the Dogs for Dixon's services. Also, do not count out LSU either, as the Bengals were very close to signing Anthony before they landed Keiland Williams. If LSU were to offer, this could shake the landscapre of Antwon's recruitment.

But like Derek Sherrod, the family connection will probably be too much for Ole Miss and LSU to overcome. Add that factor to his grades, and it looks like the Rebels are not as hot and heavy over Antwon as they once were.

***The last Dandy Dozen selection,QB Drexler Johnson, is pretty much an unknown factor. He does not have any big time offers as of writing, but that could change with another solid campaign. If he were to play for a BCS conference, it will probably have to be at another position, as Drexler is in the 5' 10" range.

***There have been rumors floating around for some time now that current MSU commit, CB Jamarie Atterberry, is going to switch commitments to Ole Miss.

These rumors started when Atterberry came to Ole Miss with his head coach and first cousin, Terry Levy, around a month ago.

Those rumors look to be coming to fruition as Jamarie has told several local Kosciusko residents that a commitment to Ole Miss will come in the near future..

***The QB position has been an anticipated one for Ole Miss fans for months now due to the uncertainty of Brent Schaeffer's academic status. In spite the fans worries, we have been told that Ole Miss will only sign one QB in the upcoming class.

Their number one target continues to be Stephen Garcia out of Florida.

The Rebels are battling for scout.com's #15 nationally ranked QB but so are South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. Those four schools continue to be the main contenders for this scrambling QB's services.

Stephen has that rare blend of size, speed, and arm strength that all colleges covet. Some insiders believe that South Carolina and Florida are one and two with the Rebels coming in third.

***Who will they sign if Stephen does not come through?

Kodi Burns out of Arkansas, who is ranked as scout.com's #9 nationally rated QB, is their man.

But the bad news is that Burns' unofficial visit did not go as well as planned, so the Rebels could be on the outside looking in for Kodi.

Hopefully having Kodi's teammate committed, OL Paul Henry, will be enough to at least get Burns in for another visit. We shall see.

Another thought of candidate is Mat Simms, the son of former Giant QB Phil Simms, but our sources say Matt has moved down Ole Miss' want list.

Keep an eye on Cameron Newton as we hear he will be coming in for an unofficial visit this summer.

***We hear that Johnathan Frink has leaped to the number one prospect, that is uncommitted, on Ole Miss' linebacker board.

They believe Johnathan has the size, speed, and intelligence to become an All-SEC type LB. Frink has become a national commodity, as he has offers from the West Coast (Stanford) to the East Coast (South Carolina).

He is currently enrolled in Ole Miss' summer school for High School students. These are college courses that are given to the brightest high school students in the land.

***Although Stevan Ridley decommitted from Ole Miss and committed to LSU, the Rebels have continued to show him "love". That love looks to have lessened, just a little bit, but he is still on the hot list board.

***Lastly, there have been more rumors surrounding Ole Miss signee, Terry Levy, than you can shake a stick. Look for everything to be put to rest next Thursday, as this is the day his case is expected to be heard by the NCAA clearinghouse.

Terry is a LDS student so there were masses of paperwork that had to be completed. Everything was sent in last week, and like we said above, the case is expected to be heard on Thursday.
