Rashod Henry has one at the top

Rashod Henry (CB, Lumberton, MS) - It is hard getting recognition when you take into account that you are playing behind Mr. Football (Clarion Ledger) in the state of Mississippi.

Terry Grant, who signed with Alabama, was getting all of the headlines. But his teammate, Rashod Henry, was doing more than his share to help his team win the Class 2A State Championship.

As a junior, Rashod scored 99 points which was 14th best in Class 2A. At the halfback position, Henry rushed 47 times for 570 yards - an average of 12.1 yards per carry - and 7 TDs. As a wide receiver, he caught 24 passes for 438 yards and 5 touchdowns.

His contributions did not stop there. Henry also punted the ball 26 times for a 35.9 average, which was 10th best in 2A. And on the defensive side of the ball, where he is projected to play on the collegiate level, he recorded 102 tackles and 6 interceptions.

It is hard to imagine a player being more versatile for a team than what Rashod was for Lumberton last year.

What is in store for an encore?

"Man, I hope to break all those numbers I put up last year," stated the always excited Rashod Henry. "The main thing I want to do is lead us back to a state championship, but I want to win Mr. Football like Terry did too. I can't lie about that. I want that award pretty bad."

Henry did receive one award that his former teammate, Terry Grant, had earned as a rising senior.

"I made (the Clarion Ledger's )Dandy Dozen (team). It was a great feeling. I never felt like that before. I was just surprised. When we went up to Jackson (for the photo shoot), I had never seen that many people before. My sister and mother got me a limo for the ride to Jackson. They surprised me. It was the best gift I have ever received. We went up there in style (laugh). But really, when I was told I made the team, my heart dropped. I was just so excited."

Despite last year's performance and making the Dandy Dozen squad; the scholarship offers have not been rolling in.

"Mississippi State is my only offer so far. I have a lot that are looking at me, but MSU is it so far."

Who could be next?

Ole Miss said something to my coach like they might be getting close. I was hoping Alabama was going to do something, but they have not. Memphis has been talking good too."

In Rashod's opinion, why has he only received one offer?

"I think my size, me being 5' 9" and skinny (165 pounds), has hurt me some. But I play bigger than I am. And I think a lot of them are waiting to see on how I do in school, and if I can make my ACT or not. I did get behind in school, but I am going to make it up this year. I am retaking the ACT test tomorrow (interview was conducted on Friday)."

Has Rashod had a chance to take in any college camps?

"I just went to MSU this past weekend. I did not make it to too many camps because of baseball. I went to Ole Miss and USM's 7 on 7 camp too."

Where did Henry perform the best?

"At MSU. I felt like nobody was on my level. I felt like I was the best player there."

Rashod had been leaning towards Alabama, but he now has a new leader.

"MSU is my first choice. I just want something new. I want to get way away from here, but at the same time, I want there to be some people there to make me feel at home. I know up there, it will feel like home."

Is there anybody else under consideration?

"Alabama. My boy (Terry Grant) is there and all. And if I go there, I know I will be playing for a great defense. They have real good DB's too, and I would like to be a part of that. Hopefully they will give me an offer pretty soon."

Could a commitment take place in the near future?

"No sir, I am going to take all of my (official) visits after the season is over and then make a decision."
