Rebs commit star linebacker out of Tennessee

Isaiah Smith (LB, Columbia, TN) - One of Tennessee's top prospects brought his father with him to Ole Miss in June to check out the campus and coaches.

Both came away very impressed.

"It was better than what we were expecting. Their facilities are top of the line. We did not know they had the things they had. We also like the small town atmosphere. I think this will give Isaiah a chance to concentrate on his studies and football, being in this kind of environment. Everything was also real convenient to get to. Their practice fields, indoor facility, and stadium are all right next to each other. It was pretty much everything you could hope for," stated Isaiah's father.

Fast forward to today's event.

Isaiah decided to bring his mother with him, in addition to his father and sister, on his unofficial visit to Ole Miss this afternoon so the whole family could get a feel for the university.

"My mother loved it. She felt real comfortable with the coaches. I think Coach Freeze and her were already pretty tight, but this just kind of sealed the deal," stated Isaiah Smith. "She was really impressed with how tough they are with your academics, and they showed us a lot of love."

And what did Isaiah think about his trip?

"It just made up my mind for sure. I went ahead and committed. My mind was pretty much made up before today, but I wanted to give my mother a chance to see the campus first. I brought my father with me last time, but my mother could not make it. He (father) told me when we left the last time we were here that I should really give Ole Miss a hard look. We told mom how beautiful and peaceful it is down there. Once she was sold, that was it. I am a Rebel now. I am at the University store on the square getting some Ole Miss gear right now."

Was it hard for Smith to turn a scholarship offer from his home state school, Tennessee?

"A little bit because it is my home state school, but I always wanted to go out of state, so it was not that hard to say no. And plus, I really think I can be the next Patrick Willis at Ole Miss. That was a big selling point for me. I just went with the one that is in my heart."

Isaiah had 20 receptions for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns at fullback last season. On defense, Smith had 68 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 5 sacks in limited action, as Isaiah missed a few games due to a high ankle sprain.

Isaiah marks Ole Miss' 17th public commitment.
