Practice notes: Saturday

Ole Miss Rebel Football Coach Ed Orgeron met with members of the media following the Rebs' afternoon practice today. It was the first full workout of the new season for the team. The rebs will practice tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. Read about it inside.

The Ole Miss football team opened up fall camp with a walk-through this morning that lasted roughly an hour and then a full helmets-and-shorts practice this afternoon that lasted roughly 3 hours.

Rebel Coach Ed Orgeron met the media after the closed practice sessions.

"For the first day, it was pretty OK. The guys reported with a great attitude and showed they were willing to work hard," Coach O opened. "We are in pretty good condition. You could tell the guys who worked hard this summer."

Coach O singled out a few players prior to the media asking some questions.

"Jeremy Garrett had a very good day today. He's our starting nose tackle right now and he did very well," O continued. "(TB) Ben Jarvus (Green-Ellis) had some good runs and Brent (Schaeffer) looked pretty good at quarterback.

"The receiver shave a long way to go, but Marshay Green and Dexter McCluster both had a couple of big plays. (MLB) Patrick Willis looked fine on his foot and Garry Pack looked extremely good at the Will LB position. Quentin (Taylor) also had a good day at Sam LB. Allen Walker and Jamal Harvey did a good job at safety for two young guys. We used Cassius Vaughn in a couple of different situations today and he showed out some too.

"Michael Oher had a tremendous day at left tackle. Everyone got work today in team situations. We wanted to be able to take a look at them on tape."

Coach O was asked to expound a little more on the long-awaited Schaeffer.

"He stepped in today with a lot of confidence and I think that gave everyone confidence," he noted. "He threw the ball really well, but obviously he has a lot of work to do and a lot of learning to do. We were very pleased with what we saw today."

Random Quotes:

On SS Jamarca Sanford returning to the lineup after missing spring with an injury: "He looked pretty good today, but I think he's a little rusty and has to get back in the flow of practice."

On Mico McSwain, who also missed spring with an injury: "Mico had some good runs and did some good things too. I'm pleased with his progress."

More on Patrick Willis: "He looked good physically, but obviously he has some things to work on just like the other guys who missed spring. We'll take it easy with him coming off tha foot injury."

On injuries: "A couple of guys got banged up a little bit. I don't have the final word on them, but when I do I will tell you."

On the heat: "Today was a good day and the heat (98 degrees) did not affect us adversely."

On the new group of freshmen: "I'm excited about them. They are really athletic. At defensive end, we have Kentrell Lockett and Greg Hardy and Marcus Tillman, who are all very athletic. Again, the safeties (Walker and Harvey) did well, the running backs and receivers did a good job for their first time out. We need more interior guys, obviously, but John Jerry did OK on the offensive line. He's very athletic but has to get in the swing of things on this level."

On Jerrell Powe's eligibility situation: "I have not heard a thing on him or anyone else that's not here and don't know when we will. We're in the bunker now. When I hear something, I'll let you guys know."

On QB Cliff Davis: "We'll see. He'll battle for a spot on the team, but he's been away from football for two or three years. He battled today and showed he has a strong arm and is athletic. I hope he will battle for the second-team spot. I expect him to do it, but it will be up to him."

On WR Carlos Suggs and DE LaMark Armour, who are out due to offseason surgery: "They are not practicing yet. I look for Carlos to be back in a week or so and I don't know about LaMark right now."

His overall impressions of the first day: "It was alright, just alright. OK. We have a lot of new guys in here and we have to see what they can do on a consistent basis. It was just kind of average."
