Practice Report: Friday

The Ole Miss football team went through their second day of two-a-days today as they prepare for tomorrow's first scrimmage. Saturday's scrimmage will begin at "between 3:30 and 4" and will be held in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It is open to the public. Read about it inside.

Heading into tomorrow's afternoon's first scrimmage - which will begin in Vaught-Hemngway Stadium "between 3:30 and 4 p.m." - Ole Miss Rebel Football Coach Ed Orgeron feels good about his team's progress in the first week of August practice.

"I think we are a lot more talented on offense. At quarterback, tight end and tailback we are better," said Coach O. "We still have more work to do along the offensive line and at the wide receier slots, we are kind of an unknown there.

"On defense, we are coming but we need work on our front four. We have to find our best combinations there. We haven't found that yet. At linebacker, we are pretty solid with Garry Pack and Patrick Willis and Quentin Taylor, who has had a good first week. In the secondary, we are where we thought we'd be. We're experienced there. Freshman Jamal Harvery is doing very well. He doesn't have his assignments down now, but I think he's one of the best athletes we brought in here and will be a big time player for us.

"On special teams, we are making progress. I think the kickers are kicking very well. Joshua Shene and Justin Sparks have both kicked well."

He is also glad to have several players, who were taking a two-week course when practice began, back at practice.

"It's good to have Brandon Jenkins and Hayward Howard back at practice. It gives us more depth along the defensive line," said Coach O. "Brandon can scrimmage tomorrow, as well as LB Antonio Turner, but Hayward and the others cannot - they have to practice another day in shorts. They are behind, but it helps to have them out there. But I'll say this - we had some young guys who played very well on the defensive front and I'm pleased with them. I think they can provide us some depth there."

The "others" who are back but will sit out the scrimmage tomorrow are DE Reterio Brown and TE Jason Hawkins.

Coach O also mentioned that walkon Punter Michael Swancey has left the team.

Tomorrow's scrimmage is open to the public.
