Rebels eye juco All-American

DeMetrius Byrd (WR, Pearl River CC, MS) - One of the more talented athletes on the preseason #1 juco ball club is looking at four schools.

"My top schools are Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Ole Miss is in the running too. It is a toss up," added DeMetrius Byrd .

What stands out about each school?

Ole Miss - "I like their winning tradition. They have a good history. They send players to the NFL. That is one of the things I like about Ole Miss."

Tennessee - "Basically the same things as Ole Miss. They put WR's in the league."

South Carolina - "They have a coach who knows what to do to get you to that next level."

Arkansas - "I do not really know too much about them. I looked them up on the net, and they are an up and coming program."

Which colleges have offered the the former Miami Central High School standout a scholarship offer?

"Tennessee, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Iowa State, South Carolina, South Florida, Central Florida, and there are some more too. I just can not think of them."

Does Byrd have any college games on tap?

"I am looking to do that when the season starts. I am looking forward to visiting Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Iowa State."

When it comes decision time; what will be the main factors?

"Definitely their depth chart. I am looking to come in and play. I am already a junior, so. I will look at the WR's on their squad. That is about it. Location will not be a problem."

Pearl River CC is absolutely loaded this year, as they have 5 selections on the Preseason 1st and 2nd Team All-American squad by the NJCAA, including Demetrius Byrd.

In fact, there are only two Mississippi WR selections on the team. The other comes from Itawamba CC's Desmond Jennings.

"Yea, me and Desmond love competing against each other. I keep up with him and he keeps up with me. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and Desmond and I have that little competition thing going, but it is a good thing. We know we are the top dogs in the state (of Mississippi)."

Byrd had 40 receptions for 700 yards and 7 TD's as a freshman and was named the Super Wildcat off of Pearl River Cc's team.

"That goes to the game breaker. You need a big play, you come to me. I set the tempo."

What makes DeMetrius' motor run?

"I have great hands, speed, and I can get open. I am also very cacheable."

And what would Byrd like to improve to take his game to the next level?

"My size. I need to get a little bigger. That is the main thing."

DeMetrius feels like he will be an improved player this upcoming season.

"I am making better reads with the defenses. I have gotten a lot stronger since last year too."
