BenJarvus Green-Ellis

When BenJarvus Green-Ellis enters a room, he's as quiet as a church mouse. His few words are measured and calculated. Underneath the calm exterior he projects is just another layer of calm. Read inside about "BJGE" as he approaches his first game as a Rebel.

Ole Miss starting Tailback BenJarvus Green-Ellis is as laid back and "cool" as anyone you are likely to meet.

Nothing seems to fluster the junior running back who transferred to Ole Miss a year ago after two successful seasons at Indiana and had to sit out last season.

After being away from the bright lights and big crowds since an early December game with the Hoosiers in 2004, you'd think a little anxiousness would start to set it.

Not the case with BenJarvus.

"It's football - something I have been doing my whole life," he said. "It doesn't matter to me what the surroundings are, I'm here to play football.

"Some people have been asking me my thoughts on playing in the SEC. I don't look at it that way. I play for Ole Miss. I want my team to win and will do whatever I have to do to make that happen, whether I was in the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, ACC. It's all football to me. I don't care who is out there or what color their jerseys are. The only thing on my mind is winning, not who we play or where."

BenJarvus was wearing a St. Louis Cardinals' baseball cap. Asked if he's a Cards' fan, he quickly said "no."

"I'm a Yankees' fan because they are winners," the New Orleans native smiled. "I've been a Yankees fan my whole life. I don't like Boston. I like the Yankee tradition of winning. I like being a part of winning.

"I know it's easy to jump on a winners' bandwagon like the Yankees, but I'm with them when they lose too, so I feel I'm legit."

BJGE said that's why he transferred to Ole Miss from Indiana.

"I want to help get the winning tradition Ole Miss has back to where it's supposed to be," he continued. "I felt Ole Miss was my opportunity to be somewhere on the rise, so I am taking my shot and trying to do what I can to help see that come about."

BenJarvus is ready for Sunday's season opener against Memphis.

"I'm always ready," he stated bluntly. "College football, or anything you do really, is about preparation. We have been preparing hard.

"We have done everything the coaches have asked us to do, we trust what they are doing and we feel good about ourselves. We are not going into the season unprepared. None of us know how this season is going to play out, but we know we've done everything in our power to make it happen in our favor."

As is the case with all running backs, BenJarvus' prductivity, in part, will be determined by the effectiveness of the guys in front of him opening up the holes.

"It's not my job to judge how the offensive line is doing, but I know I've had holes, seams and cracks to run through in practice and I expect that to continue in the games," Green-Ellis added. "I'm not worried about them. They are working hard and doing their jobs. We won't let each other down - we are a team.

"If I gain a bunch of yards, we all gain them. If I don't, we all have to look in the mirror."

So, is he the least bit anxious about getting the season underway? Nope.

"I'm not an anxious type of person. I take everything one day at a time. Right now in my life all I do is go to school and play football - it's all I want to do," he explained. "I'll be pumped up and excited, but not anxious. As far as how I will perform, I will do the same things I do in practice every day - my best.

"I'm not nervous in practice and I've never been nervous in games. I'm just going to go out there and compete as hard as I can. When it's all over, I'll be ready for practice Monday, regardless of how things go, good or bad. It's a long season and I intend on making the most of every minute of it and enjoying every minute of it."

There you have it. Cool, calm and collected. That's BenJarvus Green-Ellis in a nutshell.
