OM commit proving he is one of state's best

Stanley Porter (DL, Rosedale, MS) - Put yourself into these shoes.Your sophomore year you are named the 2004 Region 3(2A) Player of the Year after collecting 89 tackles and 14 sacks. You enter your junior year and you are right on the verge of another banner season as you collect 23 tackles, 6 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries in just three and half games of action.

Then boom, you fracture your ankle and you are out for the season.

"Man, I just wanted to be out there with the guys. I could hardly stand to be there. I just felt helpless," added the 6' 3", 250 pound Stanley Porter.

Stanley worked hard to get his ankle healed up and then another injury occured.

"In basketball this Spring, I tore a ligament in my toe. It took me all summer to get back to 100%. Basically, I have been injured for the past year and half."

But not all was lost.

"Ole Miss offered me a scholarship in February. That meant the world to me. I thought I would get lost in the shuffle, but Coach Orgeron called my coach (Henry Johnson) and told him that he had watched some film on me when he first got to Ole Miss. Then he came and saw me play right before I got hurt last year. He told coach to not worry about it, that I have a spot on his team no matter what. He said they had to have me. That showed the commitment they had in me, so I went ahead and committed."

And that commitment still stands solid.

"Oh yes, I am still sold on Ole Miss. I never have had a second thought since (I committed)."

Stanley has led West Bolivar to a 2 - 0 record and is back to his old ways.

"I have 19 tackles and 4 sacks so far against Cleveland Eastside and Cleveland High. We are going to be pretty good. We have a chance to go a long way."

Stanley's play has caught the eye of another school.

"Auburn has started calling lately."

But Ole Miss was the first college to contact Stanley on September 1st.

"Coach Hughes called me at like 6:30 am. He told me he wanted to be the first person to call me. I told him he was and he was real happy about that. I asked him how practice was going for them and he said good. He asked me how my games and practices were going and I told him about it. Then he asked me if I had any transportation to the Ole Miss/Memphis game."

What were his observations from Ole Miss' season opener?

"It looks like they need some pass rushers, which is good, because that is what I do best."

Where does Ole Miss plan to line Porter up?

"They like me at defensive end. They just want me to go get the QB. That is what I love doing the most."

What improvements has Stanley seen in his game?

"My techniques are much better. I have about the same speed, but my techniques have really allowed me to get off the ball much quicker. I get off of my blocks better too."

Porter received a qualifying ACT score in May (18) and carries a 2.9 GPA.
