Practice Report: Thursday

The Ole Miss Rebels, as is the case every game week, wrapped up their full-speed practices for the week with a short, but intense, workout in helmets and shorts this afternoon. Coach Ed Orgeron said he believes the Rebels are ready for their road trip to Missouri. Read about it inside.

Ole Miss Football Coach Ed Orgeron said he was pleased with his team's production this week in getting ready for Missouri after the Rebels held a short workout in helmets today to conclude full-speed practices for the week.

"We had a short practice today, but overall the week was good," said Coach O. "I thought the guys prepared well.

"Missouri is very good on offense. We will have to play a lot better on defense than we did against Memphis. We will see what happens. Offensively, we continued on the right track. On special teams, we continued on the right track.

"We have a lot of injuries on the defensive line - we had guys who didn't practice all week so we couldn't make a lot of changes, but we are going to go with our young guys and do the best we can."

Coach O said in Monday's press conference that a lot of the defensive problems were assignment-based.

"We worked all week on being in the right gaps, not getting reached or cut out of our gaps, stepping correctly - just fundamental stuff. Hopefully, it pays off," he said.

A lot of coaches say teams show their most significant improvement from week one to week two of a season. Does Orgeron adhere to that theory?

"We'll find out," he chuckled. "I don't really believe in those theories. I believe in making something happen. We have to make that happen, especially on defense, and I really think we are a ways off and it will take us time to get better on the defensive side of the ball."

On offense, OC Dan Werner did not play a lot of backups versus Memphis, and the ones who did played sparingly. Did Coach O see anyone moving more into the offensive rotation this week?

"Not many. Maybe a couple of more receivers might see some playing time, but that's about it," he said.

O said yesterday he has moved DE Peria Jerry inside to either DT or NT, but because Peria has not practiced this week, he's not sure how Jerry fits in his plans for Missouri right now.

"I moved him inside, but he hasn't practiced. I don't know how he'll do, but we're going to find the best place for him to play," he continued. "That's going to give more playing time on the edge to Marcus Tillman, Greg Hardy and Viciente DeLoach. Greg's doing fine. I think he's ready."

Coach O said starting LEO Chris Bowers is doubtful for the game against Missouri.

"I don't think he will play," said O.

The Rebels will hold a walk-through practice before departing for Missouri around 1:30 p.m.
