Practice Report: Thursday

The Ole Miss Rebel football team put the finishing touches on their full-speed preparation for Saturday's SEC contest with Kentucky in Lexington. For the most part, Rebel Coach Ed Orgeron was satisfied with the week's practice efforts. Read about it inside.

The Ole Miss Rebels finished up this week's full-speed practices today with a workout in shorts and helmets.

Rebel Coach Ed Orgeron was pleased with this week's preparations.

"We worked on some goalline and short yardage situations today and had a regular Thursday game-week practice. I think the guys are on schedule," said Orgeron.

Cooach O said it's been a good week of practice.

"We had a good week. We had a lot more attention to detail this week. On offense, we took care of the football better," he said. "We got back to basics this week on both sides of the ball."

Orgeron was asked about the progress of a couple of freshmen who haven't played much, or at all - notably Jamal Harvey and Allen Walker.

"Jamal will start off on the kickoff team and is doing well," said O. "Allen is doing fine. We just have so many different responsibilities for a free safety - coverages, zone blitzes, etc. If the free safety makes a mistake, it's a touchdown, so we are being real careful with him. It has nothing to do with his athletic ability - he's got that, is making good progress and will be fine."

Orgeron said only one player on the injury list for sure will not play - NT Jeremy Garrett.

"We have some guys healing up a little bit and they will be on the bus. Some of our walking wounded are coming around and are showing some pep in their step," he explained. "They can trust what they are able to do a little better than last week. That includes Peria Jerry. He's been out there some this week and has shown some signs of getting better.

"They are hurt and are playing that way. But they are showing some toughness, especially Peria. He's that type of player - tough. Because we are so thin, we are not staying out there at practice as long, but we have to get some work in to get ready for the games."

Orgeron was asked about the last ruling today by the NCAA denying DT Jerrell Powe eligibility. He could not comment due to NCAA rules stating that Jerrell is now a recruitable athlete again and coaches cannot discuss recruits with the media.
